Kelp
Bought some organic Kelp to offer to my birds. Gave every cage a free feed dish of it yesterday. The Goulds in my big wooden flight cage were literally pigging out on it, one Cock in particular was eating it every time I looked at the cage. Is it possible for him to eat too much?

Re: Kelp
Lori, did you buy the powdered or the green flake type? The powder is soooo messy, wish I realized that before I bought this huge bag of it (it stinks something fierce too after it's been in the cage for a day or two - sort of like medicine bad breath... ugh!). The green flake type my birds really enjoy. I don't think they can eat too much of it. I've heard it is supposed to help prevent balding in gouldians so I offer it regularly to them.

Re: Kelp
Kelp is good for iodine, too much is not good. I would not offer it every day.

Re: Kelp
I mix the kelp in with my mix of shells, charcoal and some vitamins. That way they can pick through it.... I have never seen the flakes... where did you get it? I have bought the granules though. And yes... stinky!!

This is where I buy the flakes (although they are calling it granules). It's more like ground greens. The powder is beige, stinks to high heaven, and gets all over the place should you even open the bag or attempt to mix it with anything.

Re: Kelp
Personally I might only offer it a couple times a week because I also feed hard boiled eggs which also has iodine a couple times a week, I wouldn't want to over do it.How often would you offer?

Re: Kelp
Anything that they "pig out" on, I give in moderation.
Some of my gouldains will pig out on charcoal. So I don't refill the charcoal dish often, maybe once a week or 2 weeks.

Re: Kelp
Just went to glamgouldians.com and purchased some kelp granules, bee pollen and feather fast to help fill in missing feathers on my gould's head. I also bought privacy perches, to give him a safe place to rest, in case the spots are from plucking.Bought some organic Kelp to offer to my birds.

Re: Kelp
Agreed... that's why I don't give millet as often or buy seeds heavy in millets. I only offer boiled eggs once per week so with my gouldians, I leave a little dish of kelp out. They do enjoy it but don't gorge on it at all. Usually when I first put the dish in, they'll all eat some, then over the next couple days, a few will dabble here and there but that's about it. I guess when it's available that often, it loses the thrill for them lolAnything that they "pig out" on, I give in moderation.

Re: Kelp
Why do you think millet would be bad for them? I only feed seed mixes with a variety of millets as the base seed.Agreed... that's why I don't give millet as often or buy seeds heavy in millets.
