Canaries and More Canaries

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Canaries and More Canaries

Post by ranchnanny » Wed Mar 20, 2013 7:36 pm

My Waterslager pair were the first to have chicks this year and it looks like 2 males.... Now another pair which are male Stafford and hen ? had 5 eggs in the nest and I just saw 3 new chicks and one of them
looks like it just finished hatching cause its bottom was still in the shell. This is exciting cause I didn't know how old the hen was (she is snow white) hence the name Snow.
My Gloster hen yellow/brown is sitting on 4 eggs and they are due to hatch anytime her male is a Stafford (crested) orange and dark brown.

Thanks I was concerned that the hen would not be a good mom but she is proofing to bejust that. Since I didn't know how old she was I took a chance mating her with a young Stafford male. She constantly would fly around the cage pulling feathers out of her breast so I but them together.

I have two more hens one sitting on 4 eggs and one feeding two hatchlings....I really enjoy watching the whole process.

Beautiful baby canaries - congrats! Just out of curiosity, how do you know that the males are males at such a young age? Usually when they're that young, even the hens make attempts at "song". Just wondering. Bob
