Sad sad day !!!

Post by nicolino » Fri Apr 19, 2013 7:36 pm

I have been crying all day today . One of my amazons has had suddenly developed respiratory infection . He had major difficulties breathing was wheezing really loud crying for days. Antibiotics were administered. Other then that no other symptoms . Today , I have came home for lunch to check on him. He wanted to sit on my hand / stepped right on my hand . I have noticed he was barely holding his balance so I took him in m y hands. He just put his head down and died ......right there in my hands. And I was totally helpless could not help him. Now I'm thinking what I did wrong ??? Was it pesticide poisoning ( my lawn was treated for bugs recently ) but the bird cage is about 4 ft . above ground. Or some kind of plnumonia, maybe due to heavy misting ( It is hot in S. Florida these days and the birds enjoy misting. ) What happened ??? What did I do wrong ? Why I could not help him ??? I have amazons for like 20 years and this is the first time something like this happened . It was so fast. My other Amazon is just fine. R.I.P. Oliver , I will miss You dearly !!! Here is a pict. from the happy days .

So very sorry for your loss.

May I make a suggestion, in the future I would recommend that you bring the remaining bird in when the yard is treated next as a precaution. It is possible depending on what was used on the lawn/yard that is could have caused an irritation to the lungs. My husband is an Entomologist and familiar with certain chemicals used in treating for pest/lawn issues...I mentioned to him what happened, he said it is entirely possible depending what is used and it is advisable to bring the bird in so it does not inhale anything that could be strong smelling or an irritant.

We are terribly sorry for your loss.

So sorry for your loss, but it must have been comforting for him to have you holding him at the end.

My neighbor sprayed the ficus hedge for white fly killing two cockatiels and several finches a few years back. Could it have been something like that?

That is very sad. I feel so bad for you. It is always so difficult to lose a beloved pet. Animals, like humans, get sick and die. Please don't blame yourself. You were there for him and he obviously loved you. You gave him the best life possible, full of love.
