My gouldian can't recover from eye injury

Post by carlamay » Sun May 05, 2013 2:34 pm

I hope someone can help me on this - I don't know how Veronica hurt her eye originally but I guess she just poked something in it. She was in a nest so I didn't realize it was infected for a couple of days. I then gave her Medistatin for 6 days. Friends came over and it was still inflamed so they suggested Ornacycline which I gave for 7 days. No better so my friend with years of finch experience took her, gave her a powerful antibotic and steriod eye drops. She really perked up and came home in 5 days where she has been happy and as perky as she gets - she is somewhat of a slug bug. It has been a couple of weeks now. I just looked over at her and she was asleep; when I woke her up she started rubbing her eye on the perch. She is blind in that eye but I was hoping all else would return to normal. Has anyone got any advise?

Poor sweet girl :( . I am sure a Gouldian expert will be on to help you soon. You are lucky to have knowledgeable friends closeby to help you. Did your friend who took her for treatment say how long recovery might take? She may just need time in the hospital cage with additional heat, protein and TLC.

Thank you ...when I got her back we thought she was well on the way to mending. Now she is rubbing it again and began sleeping. She is such a sweet and loving bird..when I speak she comes toward me with that head just turning back and forth. If the infectior resets, I don't know if she will make it this time.

You can go on www.ladygouldian.com and email Laraine. She is amazing and will get back to you asap. Really, I have asked her for help many times and she is always ready and willing to help. There is an avian vet, Dr Rob there that you can email too. Send those pics...

Poor Girl! I don't have any advice except maybe put some heat on her. I sure hopes she comes thru. I am so sorry. Please let us know.

I tried Soverign Colodial silver in gel and the eye went blood red - friend had owl finch with eye injury and his eye bled. I only used it one day. I am hoping that itchingis part of the healing process but if not, I hope Dr Robb or Laraine will know what to do next.

By the way, this is the hen that abandoned her chick when she got sick and my Cherry Cock sat and fed it for two weeks! The chick did pass but it was fat and the crop was mostly full. Just think - a Cherry Foster!! I am proud of Bing.

Thanks for the suggestion given to call Laraine@Ginene - she was so very helpful and quick to respond! It seems that the Collodial Silver in gel is harsher than in liquid..and she thinks/hopes that the healing process is why the rubbing is occuring but has suggested an antibiotic just in case. AlsoI am to change out the perches often so the bacteria can't hurt her... so relieved!

I don't know if this will help you or not, but I use a wet tea bag as a compress for budgies with eye irritations, and it seems to soothe them. It obviously wouldn't cure an infection, but it seems to have some way of reducing inflammation, I think?

After 1 month without a computer, I am finally back! Veronica is still hopping around but she will never win a beauty contest...the feathers are gone and the area around the eye a bit sunken. Assume she is blind though she does open the eye on occasion. Her poor mate is in an ugly molt - I have not experienced this yet and it looks horrible!
