Male Gouldian puffing neck feathers...

Post by Ginene » Wed Apr 03, 2013 2:47 pm

So, this morning when I came down, I noticed that my male Gouldian has 2 spots where feathers are missing on his head/face. I thought it was due to my cats swatting the cage at 5 am this morning. I took him out to check him and he seemed fine. But now, I just got home from errands and noticed that he is puffing/vibrating his neck??? I can see his skin when he does this, as it makes his neck feathers stand out. No sound is coming from him when he does this. No other strange behavior other than this. I am a serious newbie to Gouldians and would love any information from the forum. I will upload a pic asap. Thanks, Ginene

This turned out to be Luigi's attempt at singing #-o . He still does this...but NO sound comes out of him. The only reason I figured out what he was doing, is because the 2 male Gouldians I got from Lisa do the same thing when they sing. Only they actually have a little song that goes along with the throat puffing. Poor Luigi...not only is he neurotic (like me) but he doesn't even have a voice  .

Whew! Scared me, I thought one of the boys was sick!!

Some gouldians have a really soft song and don't seem to have managed the airflow necessary. Maybe that's what is happening with Luigi.

I have this one silver male who is beautiful but has a TERRIBLE song, he's doing it totally wrong and it's equivalent to a person singing through their nose. He sounds like an elephant, in fact I call him Elephant Bird and everyday I plead with him to please take some singing lessons from the other birds. LOL, love him to death though. I was actually thinking the guy I purchased from was probably (secretly) happy to see him go lol so he didn't have to hear it everyday anymore.

That's hysterical!!! Thankfully, Luigi doesn't have a bad song...he's a mute #-o . I feel sorry for him, but its fine with me. My green singers LITERALLY never stop singing!!!! EVER!!! I am happy that they are obviously happy/healthy...but come on guys, stop and take a breath once in a while  .
The twins (as I love to call them) are doing great! They have started to do the Gouldian jumping/singing dance to one another  !!! It's hysterical to watch them bouncing up and down. Luigi is pretty much a spaz at this Gouldian behavior too...Your guys are really making him look like a big dope #-o ! LOL! And poor Bella is stuck with him because I KNOW she will not mate with him, so I don't have to stress over babies.

Try living with 14 budgies, 4 parrotlets, and 17 finches, 8 of them zebras.

And my bird room is my living room.

yeesh.

@Ginene

I got this crazy idea the other day - let's mess with our green singers. I recorded some clips of mine singing. I was thinking record yours (just with your phone or something) and let's play each other's clips to each other's birds and see what they do.

It's hilarious, if I play my own green singer (Jiminy) singing, Jiminy goes NUTS and starts flying around singing his A$$ off! Like, "Wait!!! This bird know the same song I do!!" ... it's too funny

Let me see if I can link the two clips. You have to turn it up kinda loud in order to hear it clearly.

Lol!!! Just played his clips and again, he immediately drops everything and starts flying around singing in response to his own tune. Too cute :)

Wow! Beautiful song!!! My singers song is different. My male and female actually do a duet where it sounds like one song, but they each sing a part. Kind of like a Round. What about the trilling in the song from you tube? Is that your singer? My RCCB's do that, but not my singers. Btw...Luigi STILL has NO voice! He lifts his chin, warbles his little throat and NOTHING comes out!

I hear ya girl...my bird room is an extra bedroom in my house. It's down the hall from mine and right next to my son's room. Plus, we removed the regular door and hung a pretty screen door like you guys from the forum suggested. You hear my birds EVERYWHERE! LOL!

Yep, the trilling is him too. He sometimes gets into song wars with Vladimir (my Russian canary). By the way, I didn't know green singer females sang too, I thought only the males.

My cordon bleus sing beautifully but I have never heard them do a trilling sound. They all have a very pretty and strong tune though.

Both of my singers and RCCB's sing. The males have a much more intricate song, but the ladies definitely sing :) . My canary, Gretel sounds like a little chicken...she clucks...its so friggen adorable!!! BTW... LOVE that you named your Russian canary Vladimir...we are so related some how...and not just by finch-ship

Yep, my cordon hens sing too (just about fell off a chair the first time I heard the hen sing, thought I purchased wrong sex). My female canaries sing too, and yes you're right, it sounds like a chicken. Really cute :)

Vladmir sounded like a fitting name for him :)

Here's a picture of him wearing the latest in hat fashion:
