Outdoor Aviary

Still working on it. Every weekend a bit more gets done. My husband was diagnosed with tonsil cancer several months ago and is getting lymph nodes removed in his neck on Thursday then will start radiation a few weeks later. He's working hard on trying to get this aviary finished. It's on the front of the house ( doesn't everyone have an aviary on the front of their house??? LOL
The path leading to the front door divides the two aviaries, 1/4" mesh in the outside, and 10mm on the inside for better viewing. There's a high up feeding station with slide out tray for cleanliness, also a bottom door for feeding ground birds ( my new BB Fires )
An orange tree is planted, but the rest of the plants yet to go in will be in pots. Near the front, for drainage. Lots more planned, I'll send pics as we progress.

Planting it out will be the fun part! I never need an excuse to buy more plants! Thanks for tips Psylo6 on plant species to consider. Helpful, actually because I was considering grasses for the low back area for the fires, but with the species you mention it's low shrubs they need. I have a tall lime and kumquat in pots that flowers regularly (insect attractor) that will be great for my upper story birds (PF's, Goulds, owls)
I was thinking of putting my orchids near the front, on the gravel, where the light and drainage is good.
It's been an ongoing project for some months now, but the end is in sight.

Looks really neat! Are you going to enclose and heat it during the winter? Did you actually plant the Orange tree in the ground?

This aviary which has been framed up for two years now had been acting as a mini greenhouse for our tropical plants, (passion fruit, citrus and avocado, and orchids). We put two layers of plastic around it, and that would keep it above freezing when it was 20f outside. When we needed a bit more heat we plugged in a couple of heaters. Worked fine. For the aviary we are going to put polycarb sheets up and run heaters as needed to keep it no lower than 50f. Our winters are pretty good here and it might go to 20 degrees for only a week or two out of the whole winter. Can go as low as single digits every few years, but most lows are right around freezing warming up to 50's.
these two satsumas are in the ground. All the rest are in pots. Though two are outside in the ground and survived our last winter which was mild and never went below 20
