Hi All,
I posted here for a while in 2011, when my very old 14 year old Zebra finch was dying. He did pass quietly at home.
A while later, the house was just too quiet, we got a little female Pied Zebra. She was about 6 months old when we got her. We had her for about a year. She was happy, healthy, active. A few days ago I came out in the morning too feed/water her, and our pet Labradors. She seemed a bit "groggy", but that was sometimes the case real early mornings, especially while dark. That's the only retrospect red flag I had. Was her normal self the night before.
About and hour and a half after changing her food and water I was vacuuming near her cage. Looked up at the perches, no birdy. Look into the cups, bath, no birdy. She was dead on the bottom of the cage. She hadn't been puffing, or quiet, or not eating, normal poo, same old food, no changes at all. She was caged in a good sized cage by herself, there wasn't a mark on her, or anything that looked off about her. Any ideas?
Thanks!
Why would healthy happy young finch just die?

My guess would be egg bound.

Sorry to hear that, I understand this can and does happen for what ever reasons God only knows.
Good luck, again, sorry to hear that.

Maybe she was startled by the vacuum? Finches have been known to drop dead from sudden stress before. Sorry for your loss.

Thanks guys, I did wonder about "egg bind" Pieper was my 1st and only female ever. Feel terrible. She was such a happy little thing. Buried her outdoor near the birdbath and put away her cage. My parents got me a cute little owl finch yesterday. Glad they did, love this little guy already. Eating, singing, having a little blast already.

I think Lori might be right.
