Fife Hen - Of all the places to build a nest...

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Fife Hen - Of all the places to build a nest...

Post by Rox » Mon Jun 17, 2013 1:17 am

As of 15 June, Crystal is firmly sitting on 4 beautiful blue speckled eggs :D I'm quite excited as it is my first Canary breeding experience!

I just had to share where she decided to build her nest though. Despite me having put up canary nests around the aviary, lots of options to choose from, madam Crystal decided to build behind the wooden screen I have at the end of the aviary, right next to the safety cage and entrance to the aviary. After watching her hopeless attempts at trying to nest build, I eventually squeezed a wicker basket behind there for her and pushed some old cardboard in from underneath to give her a base to work with.

While it may look like a tight squeeze, the canaries and finches fit between the wooden slats on the screen easily. I'm just surprised she chose to build right next to the door of the aviary and safety cage - such a busy area!!! But I have put some travel boxes next to her on the inside of the safety cage, to give her some privacy. She has no problem with human interference and I'm quite looking forward to being able to see so clearly what's happening in the nest. So hold thumbs for 4 health chicks please!!!

The square on the photo is exactly the area where her nest is

This is how she looks from inside the safety cage - too cute!

Yup, when they're ready to lay, they'll eventually find a spot to do it. Even if it isn't what we would consider to be the "ideal" place. She'll be fine there. Good luck and keep us posted! :) Bob

Thanks so much everyone!!

My yellow Fife hen has 3 eggs as of this morning :D But she chose a much more private spot. Right at the top of the aviary but built in a nest cup at least, lol. I use a log to stand on to see whats going on inside. It always interests me to see where they choose to build. Makes me wonder what is going in those little heads of theirs :D
