Housing different finches together.

Post by Shelleypg1919 » Sun Jun 16, 2013 6:57 pm

I need some suggestions for how to pair up my variety of finches.

I have:
*****2 very large Aviary type cages (not walk in, but pretty huge)
*****4 smaller flight cages from Petco (30x18x18)

I have:
1 pair of Berries
1 pair of Blue Gouldians
1 pair of Lavender Waxbills
1 pair of RCCB
1 pair of Greensingers
3 pair of Red Beaked Fire Finches

I am putting the Fire finches into separate flight cages. The Berries are in the biggest Aviary.

Which if any can be in a mixed Aviary?

What a nice collection of finches! Hoping there'll be babies before long.
My thought on the species and cages available would be as you suggest, separate the three pairs of fires (Senegal fires) also put the green singers in the fourth cage. In the large flight cages put 1 pr Strawberries and one pr Gouldians. In the second large flight cage put the two waxbill pairs.

at one stage i had 5 pair pied rccb and 6 pair gouldians and 5 pair pied fire finches in the one aviary and never had any cross fighting between other species........except for the cock cordons fighting each other
so those 3 together would be fine.

I would measure the aviaries, find out the appropriate number of birds to be house for those size enclosures (FIC link) and then separate the birds based on that. I bought my first flight (31"Wx20.5"Dx43"H) to house 8 finches, but it turned out to be too small. It also depends on your birds. Right now my Spice pair are the Alphas among 2 owls and 2 green singers (very strange). My RCCB pair was abusing my 4 Goulds, so I had to take them out and put them in a 30x18x18 breeding cage. There's never a dull moment in the bird room...
