Post by Ace » Sun Aug 24, 2008 1:58 pm

Hi, Is anyone going to the Ft. Worth Bird Mart on 9/13/08 with Black Face Zebra Finches? I need 4 hens. Also need 2 owl finches (when I figure out which sex I have). Thanks, Ace

Hi, Ace, I will be at the Ft. Worth Bird Mart, first time as a vendor. I do have some young Owls, but I'm having a hard time figuring out what sex they are, too. They are siblings, so I can't come up with unrelated pairs anyway. PM me once you know what sex yours are. There is another person that I need to see if they can use any of these youngsters.

Hi Sally,
I DNA'd these owls. Should know in a few days. When I bought them they were in a cage with a nest and 5 eggs. I don't think they were their eggs as they were different sizes. I bought them at an auction and I think it was a sales gimmick! Put the eggs under societies but they were all clear. Threw the old nest away and gave them a new one. They both sleep in it but I have not heard either of them sing. They both make a calling noise. This is my first owls and I don't know anything about them.
I will let you know what sex they are.
Look forward to seeing you in Ft. Worth!
Ace

it depends on where you live and your avian vet as to how it is done.
some places have prepared cards that they will send you and you then send back with a drop of the birds blood whisch they then test. while others all you do is send in a feather (not sure if it can be any old feather or a specific feather, say a flight feather)
as to cost I have no idea
Addicted to Finches, yes I do admit it.
I pray they never find a cure.

Hi James,
I use DDCveterinary.com You can download sample cards from their website or request them to mail you some. Clip a toenail and get a drop or two of blood. Have blood stopper handy to stop bleeding. Let this dry and send it in. Check prices on their website. Blood testing is 19.00 for less than 5 samples or 17.00 for 5 or more. I have had excellent results from them. Ace

Hi, Ace, I'm going to phone DDC Veterinary in the morning to see if they can do a rush on DNA. Their website says they can email results. They are cheaper than Biotech. Thanks for the info.
