Yummm, some of those recipes sounded like good people food too! Some would work better for larger birds, but you can always experiment to see what your birds will eat.

Thanks for those recipes! I just went out (at 10:30pm) and bought corn muffin mix and 72 eggs. I'm gonna get some hand feeding formula tomorrow.

Hi everyone I am a little confused about these recipes. I thought it was not good to give sugar to birds. I believe that some of the ingredience have added sugar. My birds have not been getting any sugar except what's in fresh fruit. Could someone clarify this for me? Thanks in advance. Love all the knowledge I get from this forum.

The reason that sugar or high-in-sugar foods (honey, hand-feeding formula) are not good for Finches in high quantities is because they can cause yeast infections among other issues like obesity. The closest thing to an article mentioning this to back up my statement is the comments at the bottom of this link from LGF.

Fresh fruit has a different type of sugar entirely that is digested in a completely different way, but it is still not a good idea to give your flock fresh foods in mass quantities. In many cases it will prevent the proper absorption of other vital nutrients and can lead to other problems such as polyuria. Here is a link to specifics on that topic. Hope that helps!

As with most foods/ingredients, moderation is the key. You wouldn't want to dump a bunch of sugar in their food, but a little is not going to kill them. One of the most popular birdie bread basics in the U.S. is Jiffy cornbread mix. The third ingredient listed is sugar (ingredients are listed on packages in order from most to least). I can't even imagine how many people in this country mix up a box of Jiffy mix with anywhere from a few to a dozen eggs, bake it like this or add any number of veggies to the mix, and serve this quite frequently to their birds.

My finches aren't big fruit eaters, but other people find that their finches like the occasional orange or grapes. The natural sugars in fruit are not the same as processed sugar. Many of the softbills survive on huge amounts of fruit and fruit nectar.

As far as veggies, most of them are very good for our finches. There is a list of safe and unsafe veggies at the FIC. Again, moderation is key, though I admit that my birds absolutely love broccoli and kale above all other veggies.

IMO, you can't go wrong with a widely varied, balanced diet, avoiding those few foods that are complete no-nos, like avocado. With this type diet, and added protein such as is found in eggs, your birds should be healthy and happy.

Thanks for clearing that up. I have been wanting to make bird bread and now feel better about giving it a try. My societies eat pretty much any kind of vegetables but no fruit. I am sure they would like bird bread.
