How long before you know the eggs won't hatch?

Post by birdbrain » Tue Aug 26, 2008 1:16 am

My societies have been sitting on 5 eggs for what seems like an extra long time. They haven't used any filling in the nest and at the beginning it seemed like they were not sitting on them all the time. I'm wondering if they just got too cold in the beginning.
How long do I let them go on this way?

Have you candled them to see if they are fertile? With societies who don't mind nest checks, check 5 days after they start sitting. That way they won't waste their time incubatng eggs that are duds.

if I'm unsure of the exact date the eggs were laid I usually allow a maximum of 28 days

I only have a regular flashlight. Will that work for candling?

that shouldnt be a problem. I've held eggs up to the sun previously and candled them that way
Addicted to Finches, yes I do admit it.
I pray they never find a cure.

there are a few poms that believe the sun shines out of their ass, maybe you should find one of them and ask them to bend over

Mickp- thats not very nice! and Poohbear- the sun in Kent is no more too.

Birdbrain, I have candled them by holding them up to the sun. I usually give it a couple of days over 3 weeks to be sure.

Congratulations....hopefully all the others will follow shortly. How long did it take for the little guy to hatch? 2 weeks? Make sure you give the parents a lot of egg food so that the hatchlings have a healthy start on life.
I don't have any finches right now but I used to, I'll try to provide my knowledge around the forum

congrats on the little one.

Ruth I am sure that Paul took my comment exactly as it was meant.
anyway it's normal for an aussie to give a pom a hard time, especially about cricket

The poms are even starting to sign and dance about getting more golds then us at the olympics. The fact they are a group of a few nations totalling wayyyy more people then we have in australia. Facts never get in the way of a argument for them though. Bring on the Ashes again next year.

Anybody that comes from a country where Great Uncle Willie arrived in chains...has deer with pockets, that hop...bears that sleep all day in trees... indigenous people who can't throw old weapons away 'cause they keep coming back...has towns that sound like a pair of ancient groupies--Alice & Sydney...and thinks that shearing sheep should be an Olympic event......Is bound to be a bit nuts..
