Rice for Javas?
I was getting some new seed for my javas just the other day and I looked online to see what seed they mostly enjoy. Well, one website said that they would enjoy rice.
What? It didn't explain beyond that. Cooked rice? Uncooked rice? White? Brown? Just regular rice? Lol. Does anyone know/feed this to their javas?

I cook brown rice and add veggies...paddy rice can be ordered from Herman Bros Pet Products. They also like soaked quinoa....soak overnight, rinse well and served tossed with shaved broccoli and finely grated carrots.

Re: Rice for Javas?
I give mine paddy rice as well, but their favorite by far is hemp seed. I only offer it occasionally, but they go right to town on it.
Another favorite is safflower. It's part of their regular seed mix, and although my smaller birds won't touch it, the Javas and the Desert Finches both love it and always go for it first. It's another high fat seed, tho, so too much is not good. I also offer it soaked/sprouted.

mayble - Desert Finches? You have Desert Finches? O.O Pics?
Also, I gave them some uncooked rice. They sorta ate it. I'll try again. Maybe cook it up and mix in kale lol. That's their favorite. They're trying mealworms right now and not quite understanding whats so good about them. XD

I do! They are brand new to me, still in quarantine, and flighty as heck. I'm guessing they are used to aviary life rather than cage confinement. Not at all good photo subjects as they still go nuts when I approach their cages. Hopefully soon.Acelin_Wolf wrote: Desert Finches? You have Desert Finches? O.O Pics?

Re: Rice for Javas?
Many pet shops carry oat groats in little bags intended as treats for parakeets. I've even purchased them at Walmart in the pet aisle. Paddy rice, you can order online, or find at bird specialty shops. My javas will eat just about any type of cooke rice including Rice-a Roni! I just offer it sparingly and prepare it with olive oil instead of butter. Bob

Both paddy rice and boiled brown (or even white) rice can be given to Javas.

Re: Rice for Javas?
I am going to also try cooked Barley since they eat brown rice, cooked and soaked quinoa, cooked white millet (quinoa and hulled white millet, red millet are available in grocery stores). My javas eat just about everything offered.
