Question about seeds found at walmart?

Post by chirpy » Sun Jul 07, 2013 12:21 pm

I was shopping earlier and wandered to the pet section, which is a nono cause i have NO REASON to go there as I got everything the birds/cat/snake need... but i wandered and looked at the seeds there.

They sell seeds with out pellets. My birds hate the Kaytee pellets.. so they only eat the seeds. I also have Lafebers finch pellets which I am uncertain they are eating so I will soon get some of the nibbles I was told to try on the forum :) but wondering do you think these walmart pelletless seeds are worth a try? the seeds don't look at all dull.. so I am taking a guess that they are rather fresh and there were only two left so I would think they sell them a lot.

Not sure what they were called but it was a "small bird mix" with pictures of budgies, canary and finches.

Oh here they are (LINK):

There is no reason why they wouldn't be just as good as any other seed mix as long as they are fresh. My birds don't touch the colored pellets in mixes so I always get their seed without colored stuff. :)
If you have a doubt about freshness just sprout a little bit and if it doesn't sprout it's old.

I buy Kaytee Supreme in bulk at the local pet store, there aren't any pellets in it, then I add Kaytee Forti-Diet pro-health songbird treat, it is loaded with lots of different seeds. Nothing goes to waste :)

Nanajennie I will look for them when I am at petsmart the next time. I just hate seeing the pellets left behind.. it has SO MANY pellets to seed ratio.

I gave those seeds to my budgies for a little bit when I couldn't get a hold of the kind I usually give them.

I've been using the Walmart seed for years as sort of a "filler" to my daily seed offerings. I mix a premium, fortified seed 50:50 with the ones from Walmart to make it last longer. I store the mixture in one gallon airtight containers. There is nothing wrong with the Walmart seed and I would have no problem offering it on it's own. I just like to do a little better.
I use the "Wild Harvest" canary and finch blend for my canaries and waxbills, and the Hartz parakeet for my javas. Read the ingredients - you'll see they are very similar to any quality seed. Bob

Lithium Did they like them? ive always used kaytee for my Tiel so I just stuck with them but mine just don't like them.

@"30 Seconds to Bob" is this the one that you use (the link)? I guess seed is seed unless they are dull and old! I know that there is nothing wrong with them but I was just wondering.. because it is SO CHEAP. I guess the pellets is what makes things more expensive. I am looking for pellets that they will eat so that I can mix it with ordinary seed mix and create my own as I know just bird seed isn't good for them.
do you know if just bird seed, fresh fruits and vegetables, egg shell is enough for their diet or are the pellets very important.

Is there a difference in cleanliness or dust? I somehow picture lower end cheaper seeds as not cleaned as thoroughly.

Yes, I've used that one as well as 3 out of the 5 pictured at the top of that page for my javas and waxbills. I'm a little more discriminating with the canaries. Canaries shouldn't be fed parakeet seed or anything called a "universal mix". There is too much millet in it. The primary ingredients for canaries should be canary grass seed and rape seed. I would think it to be fine however for most other finches. I always supplement with fresh fruits and veggies, sprouted seeds, liquid calcium and eggfood during breeding and moulting periods. Bob

I have found (at least at the walmarts by me) that their seed is very clean, dust free and sprouts very quickly. And it doesn't have all the little bits and pieces like the more expensive mixes do.
