Draft problems for outdoor aviary

Post by subersibo » Wed Sep 03, 2008 6:34 pm

I've been planning an outdoor aviary. I live in Elk Grove, CA and the wind in our backyard is really strong at times (The former owner of the house told me the wind blew the canvas roofing off their backyard swing!). How can I keep the aviary or part of it draft-proof so the birds could have a place to get away from drafts? The wind seems to be coming from different directions.

First welcome to the forum.
Well maybe you could put a board around the edge of the aviary at the top. With some perches that would be out of the wind at the very top

I've seen pics of aviaries in new zealand that have the fronts fully enclosed with windows that can be opened when the weather permits. this apparently helps with cold weather and wind
Addicted to Finches, yes I do admit it.
I pray they never find a cure.

My aviary is built in the corner where my bathroom extension sticks out from the back of the house so that protects it from the wind on two sides. When it turns cold I get my husband to screw on panels of see through plastic sheeting to the outside of the aviary. We do this about October and then take it off again in April.
