New Food to Soak and Sprout

Post by cindy » Tue Jul 23, 2013 1:49 pm

A friend gave me a gallon bag of this mix to soak for 24 hours, rinse, set out to sprout rinsing several times until ready. It has dried whole peas, corn, safflower, whole lentils and various other seeds in it. It tastes sweet, hope they like it! What is nice is it is only $.50 a pound, comes in 50 lb bags!!!

That's a good deal for sure. Think it would be great for your parrots. The variety looks really good too. What a great find!!

Some might look at this and think that the large seeds are inappropriate for small birds such as canaries and finches. I use a very similar mix and can tell you that once it sprouts, even the smallest birds will pick at it as they would any other grass or veggie. Matter of fact, I've actually had canaries crack open the safflower and small sunflower seeds, just by the soaking alone. Piece of cake for the javas. Bob

The sprouts are what we are going for here.....the javas, finches and hookbills love it when I sprout seed, quinoa for them. My friend gave me 6 lbs to try.....all his birds large and small love it and relish the sprouts. The seeds are softened by soaking and it must sit for two more days after the initial 24 hr soak....rinsing it every 4 hours. There is a mix of very small seeds and larger ones in the mix, lentils and corn.

I will post pictures as we go...

I am also sprouting whole oats and buckwheat

Sprouting Instructions for whole oats:Yields approximately 1 Cup (1/2 lb.) of Sprouts

Put 2/3 Cup of seed* into a bowl or into your Sprouter.
Add 2-3 times as much cool (60-70 degree) water.
Mix seeds up to assure even water contact for all.
Allow seeds to Soak for 30-60 minutes.

Empty the seeds into your sprouter if necessary.
Drain off the soak water.

Rinse thoroughly with cool (60-70°) water
and Drain thoroughly.

Set anywhere out of direct sunlight and at room temperature (70° is optimal) between Rinses.

Rinse and Drain again in 8-12 hours.
And, perhaps once more...
Rinse and Drain in 8-12 hours.

How to Sprout Buckwheat

Place 2/3 Cup of buckwheat groats into a bowl and cover it with 2- 3 5times as much room temperature water. Mix the seeds up so that none are floating on the top. Allow the seeds to soak for about an hour. You need to give them plenty of time to soak, but also remember that buckwheat groats can take in too much water which will keep them from sprouting.

Drain the water in a colander and let them stand, rinsing 3 times per day with cool water for 2 days. You will notice a goopy substance on the buckwheat, which is starch. Make sure that you wash this off thoroughly.

At first you will notice a brown spot, and will then see a little sprout coming out.

My friends bourkes and other hookbills love it...the finches are the ones I am interested in, if they like it then the sprouts will be a staple in their diet a few times a week. It is a good blend.

I'd also be interested in seeing how the finches do with this. It is certainly economical, if they will eat it and not just push it around the cage (though that is not necessarily a bad thing either, if it keeps them entertained!).
