ID genetics/color of my blue hen

Post by sunnydove » Wed Sep 03, 2008 11:58 am

I purchased this pair recently from a "new" breeder 'friend' of mine. The cock is a Dilute Red Headed split to blue, and he told me the hen was a Red headed Lilac breasted. Is he correct? I have a copy of the Gouldian Naming Chart printed out, but am unable to ID it on there. Any help will be appreciated.

Hard to tell if the cock is a dilute since it's back is covered by the hen, but it looks like a normal green back.
The hen doesn't look lilac breasted to me. In the hen, a lilac breast is very pale. She looks like a normal purple breasted.

Here are better pics of both the hen and cock. My question on her, is what color is her head since it is not solid black?
On him, as you can see, he has no black outline around his red mask. So what coloration are these two? Does anyone know? Thank you!

Thanks, those ARE better pics. In the blue mutation, its lacks the yellow pigment required to produce a red or yellow head. So, you're breeder friend is correct....it's a red headed blue bodied hen and a beautiful one at that.
She is also correct about the cock. He is a dilute. Any black on his body would be gray.

Thank you Atarasi!
She is a beauty. He traded 2 Lineated Parakeets for two pairs of blue hen/dilute RH PB split to blue cocks from somewhere up on the NE coast. So I would call her a RH PB Blue? And him a Dilute RH PB split-to-blue? I was told I might get silvers out of the two. I want to know exactly how to label them so I can put them into the Gouldian Genetics Forcast formula.

Where abouts are in you WA? I lived in Tacoma and area back in 78-80. My husband was Army and stationed at Ft Lewis. Both my kids were born at the "old" Madigan Army Hosp. Loved it there. If I didn't have family ties here, I absolutely would move back there in a heartbeat. My folks are elderly and not in great shape, plus my daughter and 3 grandkids live here nearby (they are Air Force and don't know how much longer they'll be in this area) and my son lives 1 1/2 hrs away, so leaving is not in the cards for us.

Take care,

Hi Julie,

Yes, I would label them as you quoted. Is either of them or both split to white breast? You should get silvers, but only a 12.5% chance if I managed to insult the pairs' colors correctly.

I actually live fairly close to Tacoma. Grew up in West Seattle, but moved to a more affordable house here in Federal Way.

I don't think the hen has a lilac breast.

Atarsari,

Thank you! I was told my cock was a RH PB split to blue. Does that sound right? And she I guess would be a RH PB Blue? I am just trying to get the exact color correctness if you or anyone knows.
Thank you so much for your help.

Christopher,

I'm sure you are correct on my hen's breat color. Thank you for your help as well.

Gouldian Genetics

Post by sunnydove » Thu Sep 04, 2008 7:42 pm

I've tried to fill in the pair's fenotypes into the Gouldian Genetic Forecast, but there doesn't seem to be any place to identify the "dilute" of the bird. Anyone know how to get around that?

Split.

Check off "green" and then below and to the right on blue - check off "split". That means GB-B (green backed split to blue).

I realize that most of my previous question was answered concerning the cock and how to enter it into the Gouldian Genetic Forecast, but I STILL
don't know about the "dilute" part. If I only check redhead, it comes up looking like and RH normal with the black line around the mask, and I'd think that would make a difference when breeding???? Am I wrong there or does anyone know for sure?

Thanks

Okay, let's try again - if the cock is a Dilute and Split to Blue -

In the 'Male Body' portion, fill in SF Yellow and below that fill in Split to Blue.

See if that works for you.
