Gurgling Noise from Canary

Post by BigBear0007 » Fri Aug 02, 2013 10:40 pm

A friend has a canary hen that makes a gurgling
noise when she breaths.
It sounds like water in the lungs.
It's not a wheezing like when a bird has mites.

The bird is other wise heslthy and bouncy and eats well.
Anybody ever hear of anything like that?

Is the sound more noticeable when the bird is at rest and sleeping? If so it sounds like a respiratory infection and a vet visit and antibiotics might be called for.

Does it have a hint of a whistle to it? I've had hens sitting on nests make very low pitch "clucking" noises - like something you would imagine hearing from a very tiny chicken. Almost as if it's a "purr" of contentment. The only other thing I've heard that even remotely sounds like what you are describing is a very young male's feeble attempt at a song. If it isn't either one of these, a round of antibiotics may be in order. JMO Bob

Sounds like it could be a respiratory infection and there is mucus rolling around in the airway. Any other symptoms?

My tiel had something SORT OF like this but she was actually vigorously shaking her head throwing up a yellow liquid,
I was unable to get to a avian in time as she was booked out for two week :( she passed away. She was very "tired" and "sleepy" but then would perk up and be the usual, eating drinking flapping around!

I am not trying to scare you but if you can get your birdie into a avian please do, cause I couldn't :(

I hope by the time you read this she isn't showing any more signs of this and is perfectly healthy! Best of luck!
