Homemade wicker nest: Instructions

Post by Ivann 97 » Sat Aug 03, 2013 1:20 pm

Hi guys! I'll try to explain you how to make the nest from willow twigs. English isn't my primary language so you maybe wont understand me well. :/

At start you need 4 twigs 60cm long and 0.7-0.8cm width. Use only fresh twigs, so you can fold it without risk of breaking.

Image

It's not easy at the beginning. I hope you will pass this step without big problems. It can be hard to handle all twigs in one hand. Fold the twigs in the shape of a cone and distribute them evenly. Hold the top with one hand, and with the other hand wrap thin twigs around the basic twigs.

I hope that you can undestand the principle of knitting from next pictures.

If you have overcome a difficult start, congratulations! Now it's a lot easier and it's time to make the entrance. Choose one side of the nest, and every time you reach it, turn back.

When you're done with the entrance, continue to knit as at the beginning.

If you are done with your nest , cut off branches that stick out.

I hope I was a little bit helpful, also hope that you have enjoyed it. :)

I love this idea!!! We don't have willow trees down in this part of Florida but I would love to try this with basket weaving reed found at a craft store. Thank you for posting your pictures and handiness!!!

We don't have willow trees down in this part of Florida

I do. They line my retention pond. I even have a small one in a pot that I started from a cutting. You are welcome to have it Cindy if you have somewhere to plant it. Thanks for the instructions Ivan. Bob

This is so cool! I don't have any willows but have tons of bamboo. I'll have to see if I can make one out of that. Thanks for sharing!!!

Brilliant explanation! Thanks for sharing! I will deffinatly try it. I have grape vines, they may work. I made a large nest like this today out of them today (inspired by you) but its not for them to nest in, its more like a big ball they can hide in or roost in,i used silk plants entwined with the vines so its like a little hideout for the birds
