Thanks for those article Deborah, very interesting indeed.
I didn't say they had no sense of smell by the way guys. And I do know that some birds like vultures have a strong sense of smell, I was referring to finches. I have been known to use the hot pepper to keep squirrels out of the seed and the wild birds could care less. I'm incline to think it may have more to do with the birds great eye sight and the light spectrum's that they can see that we don't even come close to being able to see, but that's just me.

Debbie,
It is fascinating to learn about the different species and what senses they may use for various things. I think there may many things that work together to help them with food and foraging etc. They probably use multiple senses i some situations, just like us!

We decided to keep the original name from the breeder, Lil Bit. Too much drama!

I like it too  ...if its a girl you can nick name her Bitsy. I always wind up calling my animals by nicknames unless they're in trouble. Lol! My Kitty Harley has an auto immune disease that gives him horrible ulcers in his mouth, so I call him Boo Boo Kitty. And he responds to it too! I call my 4 year old cat Toots and his name is Tiger. Anyway...I'm rambling as always.

I agree - your pet always finds its own name, anyway! We had a dog, a silky terrier, who was called weasel, as he managed to squeeze out of a very small hole once (on new years! ). My little star finch, Fruit, was the same...:)
