Re: Found some Termites
Wow! The Australians use termites a lot for their waxbills, this might just be the answer. Just be careful that those buggers (the termites) don't get loose in your house!

Re: Found some Termites
Are you going to freeze them before offering them? Ursula puts her mealworms in the freezer just long enough to make them unconscious (if that's possible with a mealworm
) or maybe slightly frozen, so they don't crawl around her aviary. I'll be anxious to hear how this goes--as you said, termites are supposed to be about the best insect food. Mealworms are a poor substitute.

Re: Found some Termites
I know here in SA, some of the breeders leave the wood and termites in large, deep plastic containers in the aviary (deep enough for the termites not to be able to climb out). Sometimes even a plastic tub standing in bigger tub filled with water for potential runaway termites. This way the birds have constant access and the termites can't escape into the aviary/house.
I was speaking to a breeder yesterday who told me that finches can contract worms from termites. I know this to be true of black ants but not sure about termites?

I would freeze them jut to make sure the birds do not drop any it just takes a few and you will end up with a problem in the house.

Re: Found some Termites
I agree, nice find Rancel! I have heard of people just leaving some termite infested in a container, in the bird cages/aviary and the birds eat straight from there. Maybe you could freeze some and store it? I would leave the log alone though so they will continure to breed, you'll have a breeding supply in your yard!
