Bird room flooring

Post by Jossi » Sun Aug 04, 2013 2:40 pm

Hi all!
Its been a while. We have recently moved to a house and left our old apartment. I came to think of maybe converting a small room in to an aviary. I would sure love to give my little goulds some more space.

Its all in the future, but I would love some recommendations on what to do with the floor. Today the floor is an really old wooden floor, quite pretty, so I would prefer to be able to keep it intact for the future. So what have you guys used? And how do you go about with the cleaning? Its a small room, about 7x8 ft and 6,5ft high with sloping ceiling, really to small to use for anything.

Is it simple to keep aviary rooms clean?
How often do you clean the floors?
I would hate if the room attracted bugs and stuff

I was thinking of putting in a glass door instead of the wooden that hangs there today but as of now its all thoughts.

Great to hear from you Jossi! :D Maybe you could lay down some DIY wood panels or tiles? I'm sure sweeping the room daily, and maybe mopping with a bird safe solution every few days would be fine. I personally think that hard wood floors or bare floors would be easier to keep clean than having a substrate on the floor. A glass door would also be nice. My uncle is thinking of converting his bird room into an aviary and is going to put a large window in the walk for viewing

Hi Dante, its great to be back!

I was thinking something in that line as well... some hard, solid floor that could easily be mopped every once in a while... and sweept in between.
Sounds awesome with the extra window... its always nice to see them

I'm sure you'll figure it out. and I know, you must install the glass door. Looking forward to pictures of your birds!!

You could lay down linoleum. It's tough, cheap and easy to clean.
One breeder used to cut it larger than the actual floor so that it was curved upwards at the base of the floor. This prevented seed from getting under the base board and totally protected the wood floors underneath.

If you put a screen door on the room, you can still see in, but you can also hear the birds, and the air stays fresher because the room isn't closed up.
