Oh, how I wish you weren't at the opposite end of the country! So many choices, so completely inaccessible. Not just from you, I live in a finch void, here. But Ginene can drive to my house in less than two hours. Jennie could be here in 5-1/2, and would pass by on her way to NYC.TheWhiteFinchAviary wrote: Nerien wrote:
@Ginene Hey, if you want CFW's, I can raise some for you.
I tried to tempt her with CFWs, Phaeos, GCs, BC CFWs.. she was solid on the Penguins
@Nanajennie Isn't it so frustrating how long it takes to start to see color? We started hearing Star trying to sing before we could see cheek color, softly squeaking like a stuck joint being forced to turn. So funny sounding, until he learned to control his voice and gained confidence. If Woodstock isn't a Charlie Jr, then she's Charlene Jr. And maybe some day she can have a big, beautiful son, Charlie's grandson, for you.

Jennie, it is still a bit early to tell but I hope it is a little boy. Can you get a little picture of it's chest?

Nanajennie I had to do a double take when you said Woodstock is a CFW x CFW offspring. That's one of the main mutations I've been breeding & one that I've always had ~ never had any gray-looking babies though! My guess would be male, but you'll know for certain when his cheek patches and flanks start to come in. Even on my Dilute or "Ino" CFWs, I can always see the flanks and cheeks.
Here's a Dilute & Regular CFW juvie (both males):

And one of my LB babies (he is a male):

@Ginene My Penguins are already back to making their new nests to lay their new clutches
I can't wait to send you HatchCards for little Mumble & Gloria! They will be my favorite to raise this season by far.
@Nerien I do offer shipping!
Although I think most people hate that word when it comes to Finches (I used to feel the same). Personally, I have shipped as far as Pittsburgh and LA this season and never had an issue. We also have a lot of exotic Finch breeders on this coast, I could always pick up a pair and ship it for you! Always down to help a fellow feather enthusiast.

If this is a little boy he will likely be split to CFW.

I have no way to get to an airport, which are too far from here, for pick up, and any kind of ground transport is so poor in this area that even the junk mail is delayed and mangled. Long ago I went to school in Oregon, and even under the best conditions, it is a very very long trip. And then there's the budget, currently looking at school clothes, books, new violin, dance lessons, 4 tires for an SUV, fuel oil contract...@Nerien I do offer shipping!

Nerien Well the next time I make the trip up to NY or MA to visit family I will have to schedule a detour.
I also do a free pair giveaway each season, always looking for an excuse to give away some babies to a Finch lover who will take good care of them.

Re: Need some insight Please, a couple of issues...
TheWhiteFinchAviary Awwww....you are so sweet. It's just so frustrating here sometimes, I see everyone with finches nesting and finches hatching and finches fledging, and finding all types of new birds, and then getting to go to shows and finding even more new birds at insane prices (the filthy little store near me that sometimes has OC & Goldbreast waxbills, wants $100 a pair, and no guarantee on sexes, and not that healthy), by luck we found a saddleback zebra hen there, and now we can't find even just a plain old pied zebra for her anywhere...it's like I might as well live on a different planet here.

Re: Need some insight Please, a couple of issues...
Nerien I feel your pain!! When I started keeping Zebbies I lived in DC and seemed to ALWAYS be working during the Baltimore bird fair (seriously, 3 years in a row.. so frustrating!). All I could find was CFWs and BCs all up and down the East Coast. Not even NGs, but I could find every kind of Gouldian known to mankind. And if I went to some obscure fair or show, I MIGHT be lucky enough to have gotten an OB at best. It was devastating when I found out about the existence of Diamond Firetails/Strawberries/etc. - I basically accepted the fact that I would never find any. Now I'm picking out my breeders.
It was only when I moved to CA and then WA that I actually was able to access some of the mutations and species I had been drooling over. So I retired my older CFWs & BCs and started keeping the rainbow that I now have.
It really is no trouble! I'll be continuing to ship until the end of my breeding season in a month or two, so I will already be making the arrangements and whatnot for other people anyway. No pressure
