HELP!!!! I have a new flight cage and 6 new finches...making 8 finches in the cage. It is a wonderful cage...but I don't know how to get into it for anything...food, water...without letting the birds out. I'm sure there is a trick to this!

Any chance of a picture? I'm afraid this is where new keepers should ask questions on here before purchasing a cage.It sounds like you are going to have a job cleaning and maintaining this cage too...a picture would help so we can try to advise.

I will send a picture. It is a HQ flight cage. Cleaning will be easy as it has a grate and a slide in pan at the bottom. There are 2 bug doors on the front and 2 smaller doors high up on the side.

Nice cage Judith...you have no problem there...use the lower door for feeding etc. birds always keep to the high perches.May I suggest if it has a bottom grille, to cover it in newspaper...many a young bird has broken legs from these grilles.
I purchased many breeding cages years ago...and the first thing I did was get rid of the grilles.

Good luck Judith, what kind of finches did you get?

I'm already thinking of adding on another few feet onto the aviary....I have an addiction to birds

yay we have another addict who admits it. best way to fix the addiction is to get more cages and more birds. dont try denyinh yourself as it just makes the wanting worse
Addicted to Finches, yes I do admit it.
I pray they never find a cure.

Mickp I have such limited room and I have to maintain the "look" of my place so I have to either become creative or just stop with the craziness lol.

Here are some updated pictures that I just took....Most of them are on the same branch as the birds really like it. I'm still having trouble with the glare from the plexi front. Enjoy!

This one is kind of difficult to see but the blue faced finch is in the back.

They look awsome without any wire in front of them. Maybe you should look up tips people give on taking photos of fish because they seem to have glare reduction down to a fine art.

Try taking photos with a darkened room and lots of light over the aviary.
The reflection is coming from the light in the room, so try to eliminate that.
Then lots of light over the birds, and don't use flash (which will create reflection as well).

Whoops, edited to add I think the photos are great anyway, and your birds are stunning! I can't wait to get my CBs!

Judith McGregor, check out the posting I did under Housing about making the HQ single flight better. There are a few tips there that may or may not work for you. I hate grates myself, but I have to admit it is easier to work with the cage with the grate in place. If you use the grate, follow Paul's advice and cover it with newspaper.

Seems like any time I open the top front door, I have an escapee, because they all fly up to the top perches when I approach. I try to only use the bottom front door to service the cage. I hang feeders, etc., down at that level, so I only open the top door infrequently.
