UPDATE!! Ruby (rosy bourke) is sitting on 5 eggs with the first laid 7/30 and the last egg laid 8/9 and keeping my fingers crossed. She is sitting tight and rarely leaves the nest. I can hardly wait to see it the eggs hatch...

Will you handfeed out or let mom and dad feed?

I think I may do the same. If in the future someone wants handfed I can do that to. Scrubbed al my new nestboxes down and set them in the sun...a couple of more months and we will be setting a pair or two up to nest along with Scarlets.

Yes Cindy she is still sitting tight she does come out once in a great while then goes back in.

What size are bourkes??? Canary size, parakeet size or tiel size???What size cage (bar spacing too) would 1 bourke need. 30"W minimum like finches/canaries or less? Su has a cinnamon male with a bad leg that isn't good for breeding and needs a home. I was thinking he might do well with us . Maybe hang a cage for him in our family room, as we spend most of our time in there.

Ginene the Bourkes are bigger then a parakeet and spacing isn't a problem 1/2 inch or bigger. I love my Bourkes cause they are pretty quiet and don't make a mess They get along with other birds as well....I have one pair in a 30inch cage and they are doing well.

Thanks Sherry...This male has a fractured leg and will most likely lose his foot. I am looking for a cage that I can hang in my family room, as I have cats so a stand is out of the question. Is 18Wx18Dx25H too restrictive for 1 special needs bourke?

Bourkes do better in a pair or more than two bourkes....they do not do well if used to a bourke flock and then kept alone. JMO...had bourkes through out the yrs and it is best for them to have their own kind unless very hand tame. they are best in a long 5 ft flight since they like to fly back and forth. They have a good size wing span. The cage you mentioned is to small. 30x18 is better since he still can fly... longer the better. All my grasskeets are in 5 ft flights, bourkes are in the 8x6x3 aviary. I will be using 30x18 cages for breeding then back in the aviary they go.

OK...I figured as much...I would NEVER deprive a bird (or any animal) of the space they need !!! I just saw Su's post for this little guy and wanted to take him. Our family is FULL of special needs, so he would make a perfect addition to our household . She said that she is looking for someone who would want him as a pet, as he isn't suitable for breeding. Would he still require a mate Cindy...maybe he would be happy in a large flight with finches??? I am DYING to have a "pet" bird in our home that will enjoy our family. This guy would be in our family room, which is the "heart" of our home...I know it sounds selfish ...but I would get him a cage that is 30"W. In the family room, he would be alone in his cage and have us humans as company. I guess he would visit the bird room too...but be honest Cindy...I will NOT take him if its not in his best interest.

I have very tame bourkes that fly down and eat out of my hand and land on my head, they are social...some are not as tame but the two have remained this way even when kept in the large aviary. The do like companionship. They are fairly quiet during the day, sleeping a bit and more active at dusk, early morning and dawn, early evening. They do well in a flight with passive finches.

Unless he is hand tame and very used to people I would not keep him alone. JMO. You need to talk to Su Yin, ask her since she knows the bird and his dispositions. Also the cats may be a concern since he is handicapped, ask Su Yin her thoughts on it.

You could do a hand tame lovebird or budgie. A bit more sturdy especially if you have young children.
