Nesting Locations/Disputes...HELP!

Post by FinchezRule » Mon Sep 15, 2008 11:23 am

A lot of breeding behavior is being demonstrated with my birds so I decided to add some nests.

All was fine except today the Cordons, Gouldians, Stars, and Gold Breasts all want the same two nests! What should I do? Should I remove the most popular ones and reposition them? Everyone seems eager to start a family but there are disputes over nests :? . I even added a fiscus bush in hopes that someone would use that but nobody has shown any interest.

Thanks!

Are your birds in a cage of an open aviary? They SAY to have two nest for each pair of birds. That seems alot to me..... I don't care what I put up my birds always want the same ones. I think they will work it out soon or later.

Well I have them in a flight/aviary that I built. I'm not really sure what I should call it...I can fit in it and it has plants so an aviary? It's a little over 6' long 6' tall and a little over 2' wide. I'm thinking I'll just buy more nests and monitor them to make sure nobody gets too bossy. I already removed and sold the shafttails. I even had to take out the societies because they were just too nosy and wanted every nest. The male was even chasing around other birds...I dont know what his mop head looking self was up to lol.

You have sufficient space for the birds you have by the sounds of it...but not if you want them to breed. You are asking too much for them to get along when they are nesting next to each other..I note from your signature that you are getting even more...this will add to your problems.
6x6x2 is only large enough for two pairs breeding and even then you may get problems.

I agree. That is 20 birds . I have about 22 birds in three times that space and they still fuss over breeding spots.

Thanks for the help. I think i'll just remove the nests and rotate the birds out of a cage to breed. I don't have all 20 birds in there but nontheless I guess it is too many birds to breed with the guys I have.

Something I didn't see in your post is what size and types of nest you are using. From our experience the Cordons and Goldbreast prefer small bamboo nests. Our Goulds and Stars prefer the large bamboo, sea grass gourd, or plastic nest box. If you offer a variety of nest sizes you could eliminate the competition as each species has perferences when they are available.
