Years ago I purchsed a zebra hen with what appeared to be an infected feather follicle which erupted. The area looked exactly like that prior to opening. The hen passed away quickly before I could even help her.

Where on the back is the lump? Is it near the tail feathers? I can't tell from the picture. I would try a warm compress three times a day and/or take to an avian vet.

I think it's an infected preening gland. If it's as hard as a rock, you'll need to take it to an avian vet to be drained. You can try warm/not hot compresses for 10 minutes, three to four times a day to soften it, but my Spice finch had this problem and even though the compresses and warm bath water helped her discomfort, the vet had to drain the abcess and give her antibiotics because they get infected. The vet told me that infected preening glands can develop due to a lack of Vitamin A. Good Luck!
