star finch egg laying

Post by sean » Wed Sep 17, 2008 11:55 pm

i'm curious. how often do star hens lay eggs?
my hen seems to do so often--on average 2 eggs every two weeks or so. this seems like alot to me. does anybody know if it is something i should be concerned about? since i don't have a nest, the eggs just drop down and break on the floor. all appear unfertilized.

I just sent you a PM, but now I see that the birds don't have a nest. Do you want them to breed, or are you just concerned that she is laying eggs? Hens will drop eggs on the floor frequently if they don't have a nest to use. All the eggs look unfertilized at first, takes them about a week to look like there is something there. Sometimes it is hard to make them stop if they really get into breeding mode.

If you want them to breed, then supplying them with a wicker hooded nest and some nesting material--coco fiber, or even bermuda grass hay (or timothy, if that's what is in your area), and a few white feathers for lining should make them happy.
