Potted plants in the flight cage??

Post by Nanajennie » Sun Sep 08, 2013 9:56 am

I am toying with the thought of taking the millet that has sprouted outside and transplanting it in one of my large tall flight cages... :?:

They are not very tall, but I was concerned about the soil, is there any danger in putting the soil from my yard in there? I never use chemicals on my yard, so that shouldn't be an issue, but there is a bit of old mulch mixed in.... Thanks in advance

What kind of mulch is it? Some Mulch is chemical treated so I'd use caution there. Other then that you need to consider the possibility of introducing parasites from the wild birds that have visited your yard. You could transplant the plants into clean soil...shake as much of the yard soil of as you can and do it that way.

Angela&Shalamar that is great thinking... I am going to do that, I am going to rinse the root balls off and buy some organic potting soil, I know there is a local seller around here. Thanks!

Welcome!
The birds and visitors and family love live, potted plants in their enclosures. Make sure you are putting plants from the "safe list".

Also, if they are not already, I would repot in organic potting soil.

It's been posted and discussed before, and there is a link on the left, under "Helpful Finch Links".
Here is a link to safe and un-safe enclosure plantings:
