Gouldian coughing and strange tongue movement with beak open

Post by thenootz » Fri Sep 06, 2013 9:23 am

Hello dear finch enthusiasts friends,

This is my first post here and wanted to be an introductory one about me and my birds. That was my plan 2 days ago when, unfortunately I have discovered my blue gouldian hen is sick.
I found her at dawn when all other birds slept staying on a perch, coughing and having a wheezing breath... Immediately I've putted her in a hospital cage with heat.
She started to molt few days back and suspecting she has developed an ASM increment in numbers, I've started a treatment with S76, one drop on skin of the back head each day and also in her drinking water for 5 consecutive days. Unfortunately, almost 48 hours later she still cough and make a strange movement with his tongue having the beak open. Seeing this I've mixed Ronex 12% and Amoxitex (1 ts +2 ts to 1 quart water) and started right away a treatment.
I think I've read somewhere that you cannot mix Ivermectin (S76) with Amoxitex that's why I'm asking you If its the right thing to do what have I done and what should I do next. As I've started the Ronex-Amoxitex treatement, should I continue also with S76???
Thanks for your opinions and hoping for best. [-o<

That's her, sorry for the poor video quality...

Hi,

I tried answering this post earlier, but it didn't come through. First off, I would STOP the other meds. It sounds like she had a bad case of air sac mites, and the dead ones are clogging her breathing tubes.
I would put her in a hospital cage, with heat, and put QuickGel, or ER formula in her water, for a few days. Follow-up with Probiotics.
Then, go from there if she is still not 100%

There are those who are more expert than I am, and I am sure they will chime in. Sounds like you did the full course of S76, and she had a bad infestation. I would definitely treat the rest of the flock, from the cage she came from.

Can't access the YouTube video, btw, it is unavailable, marked "Private".

Good Luck!

I also tried answering the first post and couldn't :(
You can NOT mix S76 with Ronex and Amoxitex so I would stop giving those till you are done with the full 5 day treatment of S76. The S76 should be either in the water or a drop on the skin not both, you wouldn't want to give her an overdose. After the S76 treatment I would reassess her condition and decide about the other medicines, if they are needed or not.
good luck

Sunbay, debbie276,

Thank you for your opinions, this was also my first concern (to not overdose her with meds) BUT today, after almost 48 h on S76 treatment It seemed to me that her condition hasn't improved and the coughing and wheezing symptoms definitely not disappeared. In line with your given advice, I wanted to stop the antibiotics and continue treatment with S76 but... I just got home and found she started to have a wet vent !!! I'm afraid she could have a secondary infection.
I'm really worried now, really don't know what to do #-o

Sunbay, I already putted all my other goulds on S76. Also I've edited video settings, now should be public.

Well, she's eating, drinking and seems her condition is a little better in this morning
She had Ronex mixed with Amoxitex only for about 10 hours in her water.
Now she's only with heat and S76...I'll continue like this till fifth day and then add Probiotics for another 2-3 days.
I'll Keep my fingers crossed [-o< , and keep you updated with her status.
Thanks again.

I always get freaked out when a bird gets sick. They are just so fragile... I'm really glad you caught your girl in time and that she is doing better! I hope she makes a full recovery and has a stress free moult now :)

I would still keep her in the hospital cage with a heat source for at least another week or so. Alternate probiotics and N-V powder, (or similar) in her drinking water - give her purified water in her bath dish too.

So glad she is better!
