Housing for Handicapped Society?

So Pipkin just doesn't seem like he's gonna be o.k., to go back with the rest of the flock. He just doesn't seem right but he's not sick. I'd like to find a good cage to set up for him but I don't know if I want to get another petco flight just for him. I'd think he'd do better in something smaller since he doesn't seem to fly 100% right. Right now he's been on cage rest in a small parakeet cage but it's not really a good long term solution for him and I think he gotten all the better he's going to get in there. Does anyone have any good cage ideas or thoughts. Wish he could go back with the boys and while he's alert and active my gut tells me it wouldn't go well. They've already rejected him once.

Pipkin is a Society Finch. He had caught his nail and leg in the nest a few weeks back but just hasn't been right since. He was on Anti-inflammatories and cage rest but the vet didn't find any injuries he could feel. I put him back with the boys once and they attacked and rejected him. It's been a few weeks but I just feel they would reject him again, he just doesn't seem right in a nondescript sort of way, doesn't fly quit right when he does get loss.

Angela&Shalamar oh yeah, now I remember. I think it is wise to keep him separate for a little while, maybe another Petco cage would be best, that way, when he is ready to fly, he has plenty of room. Do you have a mild mate you could pair him with? Poor little guy

My hospital cage is a Prevue Hendryx Stack & Lock Breeding Cage. Its 23 1/4" L x 10 1/2" D x 14"H. Maybe this size would be good for Pipkin. They sell it on amazon and Drs Fosters & Smith.

Could you try the same Petco cage and perhaps get him a new friend that doesn't have a history with him? Maybe if you put a new bird with him and moved them both away, out of sight of the others, the new bird would bond with him. A companion would probably make him happier and maybe perk him up a little.

If he doesn't fly well, put more perches than you normally would in there, perhaps criss-crossing around the edges, so he can still practice flying across the middle area, but he can easily hop up and down levels around the edges from perch to perch. Make sure food and water are right next to an easy perch so he can get them without effort.

I think getting him a new friend of the same gender and a PETCO flight cage would be a good idea. I also just ordered from Foster and Smith a corner cage shelf that is a number of graduated perches put together. I don't presently have a disabled bird but I have in the past. The reviews for it have all been positive so I thought my birds would like it just for something new. Good luck with the little guy. He sounds like a sweety.

hmmm not sure I want to risk trying to get him a friend as if it doesn't work out I'd have no good place to house him. The male cage already has 6 birds in it so I really don't want to risk having to add more. Will look into the pervue cage and add plenty of perches. He really is gonna need more room to really have a chance to fly right again.

Hi Jennie, Sorry just saw your message above. Yes I do have a petco nearby so getting cages is no issues. Not sure how much the shipping from you would be. I got a perch and put in with Pipkin and he is happily up on it. The first time he's been on a perch in several weeks.
