Flew into window & travelled across the county...Has iss

My pair of shaft tails were doing pretty good until recently. (the female laid four eggs and they were starting to sit and alternate). Tense times..... I was moving to Ohio last weekend and on the last night my male bird escaped. I was so tired that I forgot to close the shades and he flew into the window. He hit pretty hard. I picked him up and put him back in the cage..... not good. he was splaid out. set up the hospital cage. I held him for awhile in my warm palm. eyes closed but breathing. I thought he was going to die but he didn't.

Fast forward to the next morning where my husband and I packed up the car, finished packing the moving truck and starting driving 2500 mile to ohio. Birds are in travel cage.... His eyes half open and all puffed up. no song. eating very little. it took us three days.. every day he is getting a little bit better. started to preen as best he could....stiff and sore still.

Now I'm in Ohio and it has been one full day not in the car traveling. His eyes are more full/open, not as puffed up. but things i have noticed still have me concerned.

-beak on both sides are damaged. broken, peeling & spilting, top beak at center on sides. ( i didn't see this on the night of his accident.) I think I might have heard a poping sound today (air mites?)
-no song... doesn't talk very much
-goes and sits in nest for log periods of time.
-not eating as much as his 'Honey'

Can anyone give me advice???.... I'm very worried. Feel terrible. Want my "little Guy" back healthy.... he had 4 beautiful songs

Hi,

I wouldn't suspect air sac mites, it is probably associated with his accident I can't think of anything else you can do apart from the normal provision of good food, clean water and warmth.

Keep us posted on his progress!

I agree with Finchie. Put food and water where he can reach it easily, and add extra warmth to the cage so he can concentrate on healing. Let us know how he does - poor little guy!

If possible I'd try soft foods if he will eat any, might be easier on him. Best of luck to you both.

Thanks everyone for a fast response.... I made up egg food yesterday. he his eating and drinking pretty well. I'll let you know how he does. I feel so bad for him.... what a rough week. I think he'll make it through as he was very healthy and robust little guy before the accident.

I guess if I was him I'd stay in my warm cozy nest too.
