Breeding Napoleon Weavers

Post by Weavers.com » Wed Sep 24, 2008 5:31 pm

Hi, i'm 15 and new to this forum. I have recently acquired two hens and one beautiful cock. I've read that weavers are extremely difficult to breed and need materials to weave their own nest. Will they accept a premade nest. I have some success with cordon blues. They laid eggs and kicked the chicks out while i was gone and my neighbor didn't know what to do. Since then i now have 2 more pairs of blues. Do you think i'm in over my head with the weavers? will they breed for me? any tips, experiences or advice will be mopst appreciated.

Do you have an aviary? Weavers like to build their nests above water in reeds and grasses. I'm not sure if people have great luck in cage breeding.

Not easy.....better in a roomy flight...and the cocks need green grass to make nests...not dried.Experienced breeders have tried and failed...not an easy task.

The store i bought them from said they were a proven trio and that they have had many successful clutches. I was also wondering if they would use an artificial nest. The male has been singing a lot and is in breeding color so i was wondering if they would breed without an aviary but in a flight cage. What are the display signs that the male performs before courtship?

Sounds like the store should be able to help you with your questions.

the store only told me they are a proven trio and they have had several clutches succesfully. Other than that they know very little about them. The only thing their positive about is that they want first dibs on the babies.

Why would the owner of a very difficult to breed bird part with them if they are so successful???

the store owner got them from a retiring bird breeder that had all the success. The store also does not breed birds.

No offense, but if you're 15 yrs old with money, I think they're going to tell you anything you want to hear. Good luck with them.
