Can someone point me to a full spectrum hood light fixture

Post by FinchsRUS » Wed Oct 09, 2013 9:28 pm

I need a light for my cage and I prefer a hood type like a fish tank. The cage is 28" side to side. Slightly smaller would work fine as well. We can always add wood and glass to the top.

I use under the counter light fixtures, you can find them at Home Depot or WalMart

Have you looked at the aquarium fixtures? You can always swap the bulb for a full-spectrum one.

I agree with Martie, if you like the look of the aquarium hoods, get one to fit your cage/flight and then just put a full-spectrum bulb in it.

I have a few of these and one thing I appreciate about them is the quality - they are very sturdy and well made. Mine are maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but there are many types.

I found an article regarding avian lighting and it's a little more complicated than buying a full spectrum bulb. Is there a way to attach a pdf file here?

Can you post a link to the article? Because of copyright laws, we don't allow entire articles to be posted here, but a link will do. Or, a paragraph or two can be quoted, as long as the original author is credited and a link posted to the rest of the article.

I read the article on a facebook page but did find "the original source" from the Mickaboo.org site:

Read "Proper Lighting to Support Avian Vision"

Thank you! It's been quite a while since I purchased them, and am glad to know this.

You could also look in the reptile section at the pet store as well

Article says not to buy those.,birds need different light, temperature (not def F) than reptiles.

So finchesRUS, did you decide on a hood? I am also looking. The best bulb in 24" appears to be unobtanium locally. There are plenty of high K lights for salt, low K for fresh and a mix of stuff for plants and reptiles. I am currently poised to pull the trigger on the best bulb I have found. This bulb is 5000K, 1400 lumen with a CRI at 91. The bulb can be found here-> http://www.fullspectrumsolutions.com/fu ... 5_prd1.htm and you can buy them singly.

The problem with this bulb is it's a T8 bulb and I really like the sleek look of the T5 fish tank fixtures. However, I have not been able to find a good T5 bulb. Again, it's all fish, plants and reptiles.

Maybe someone has a pointer to a good T5 bulb solution? If not I will probably order this bulb and pick up a fixture from PetSmart.

Again, this is for a 24" light and fixture. I can find plenty of 48" T8 bulbs that meet the requirements.

Mikeski...
