I was so excited to see chestnut breasted mannikin in the finch show last weekend. Let alone, find out whose it was and convince them to sell him to me!
Once I had this guy, I got in contact with a bird friend in Alabama and she was kind enough to send us her 3 chestnuts and a surprise gouldian hen came along too.
The one from the show is NFSS banded and from Canada the other three we do not know how old they are, but we are still going to try and breed them anyways.
I also got a pair of star finches at the bird mart.

Nice find Brian!
The colors are so dark and rich on that gouldian, don't be surprised if it starts singing.
best of luck

I love the CBM!!! I had two pairs a while back. Their song is a little annoying, but their beauty is worth it. Congratulations!!!

I'm glad to have them!
I'm starting to think I have 3 males and one old hen.
But who knows what could happen.
Cindy has pointed me in the direction of a few breeders on the east coast working with them.
I actually enjoy their song. This coming from someone who has had to rehome several species who had annoyed me.

Can they be visually sexed or are they visually the same? One looks a little duller in the photo so I wasn't sure if that indicates female vs male? (the CBMs that is)

They are visually the same. The "male" I got from the show is slightly darker than the other 3 birds I got. I think it may be another subspecies. I've heard 2 of the 4 birds sing. I'm hoping I have 2 pair, but am not entirely sure...
I've observed them for a couple hours each day and still have not heard the other 2 sing. Maybe someone who is more familiar with them could tell me if some males just don't sing as much? or if I haven't heard them sing at all, they are most likely females..?
