Need plans for building wooden nest boxes

Post by karthik_s9 » Sun Sep 28, 2008 4:42 pm

I hope few members might be building there own wooden nest boxes and it will be great if you can help me with the plans.

Seen a milk box plan on efinch site, but looking for some wooden nest box plans.

Thanks :)

I've never personally built one but it doesn't look difficult at all. If you take a store bought one and look at the dimmensions you can just copy that. I guess the nestbox doesn't have to be 100% asthetically pleasing as long as it's sturdy and the birds are willing to use it.

Most of the boxes i've seen have had the holes in the center near the top. You can replicate the milk box plan from efinch and make it into wood.
I don't have any finches right now but I used to, I'll try to provide my knowledge around the forum

Thanks FinchezRule.

Actually what is the problem here in my place is that we don't find a pet shop with finch nest boxes, most the products available are of Dogs/Cats, that is why I have started this thread.

So I need to decide and built one best common nest type which can be used for zebra, star, and gouldian type finches. Local zebra type breeders are using nest boxes of type - half top front open of size 4 inches square with 1.5 inches top front open.

I read on net that zebra type finches are okay with any nest type, I think star and gouldian type finches prefer privacy....so I thought nest box with an entrance hole will be the best one, this is my personal view only and please correct me if my view is wrong. :)

generally the birds will use whatever is available to them, just make sure that each pair of birds has a choice of two nests. gouldians should be ok with the type of nest box you described.
Addicted to Finches, yes I do admit it.
I pray they never find a cure.

Thanks Mickp.

But I heard that gouldians are little sigh type and best nest type is wooden box with a entrance hole.

What is the best nest type for zebra and star type finches.

my gouldians have in the past chosen a woven nest over the nest box. it realy is up to the birds to choose all we can do is provide them with a variety of choices each time
