WHAT WILL MY BABIES BE??????
Hi, I'm still fairly new to breeding gouldians and dont quite understand the genetics. just wondering if anyone can give me an idea as to what my babies will be... MALE is red face lilac breast greenback, FEMALE is red face white breast yellowback. will the babies be dilutes? splits? any info would be much appreciated. Thanks!!!

Welcome to the forum! There's lots of good reading at the Finch Information Center, linked at left, and the members are always ready to answer questions.
I don't know much about Gouldian genetics, but here is a link to some information: http://www.finchinfo.com/genetics/lady_ ... /index.php
And one of our members, nixity, has some excellent information on Gouldian genetics on her website: www.gouldiansgalore.com.

All the males will be RH.LB/WB.SFYellow and the hens RH.LB/WB.Normal of course barring any hidden genes.GouldianGirl wrote: Hi, I'm still fairly new to breeding gouldians and dont quite understand the genetics. just wondering if anyone can give me an idea as to what my babies will be... Re: WHAT WILL MY BABIES BE??????
Thanks for the info. So I can expect only lilac or white breast? Also, I've seen salmon head gouldians and they are to die for, how do you get this morph? Any idea? I'd love to get my hands on one!!!

Re: WHAT WILL MY BABIES BE??????
You will only get LB/WB (Lilac Breast split to White Breast) from this pair. The only way to get a WB chick would be if both of these adults are split to WB
The "salmon" head birds are genetically either RH or YH Blue body birds. Being Bb the red and/or orange of a YH can not show therefore it is visually "salmon" or a shade of tan.

Re: WHAT WILL MY BABIES BE??????
I would say 75% of Lilac Breasted birds are split for White, so I'd be willing to bet the male is split.
Are you sure he's lilac or are you just referring to it as lilac versus purple?

Re: WHAT WILL MY BABIES BE??????
I bought him as a lilac breast, and he really is a very light purple compared to a normal. So, if hes split to w/b then some babies will come out white breast as well? They have eggs in the nest right now so Im super excited to see what happens!!!

If he is split to WB then all chicks will be either LB/WB (Lilac Breast split to WB) or WB
Good luck, keep us posted

You won't get any dilutes because dilute requires PB. All of your males will be SF Yellow and hens will be green.
RH LB SFY is a beautiful mutation, I think. Here is one of my males I bred earlier this year:

Single Factor Yellow is a single yellow gene.GouldianGirl wrote: thats a single factor yellow? im still trying to understand genetics, its quite confusing lol. i dont think i will get that mutation from my pair will I? red face lilac green back male with red face white chest yellow back female, all babies will be green back? but males will carry yellow gene.
All your chicks barring any hidden genes will be:
males: RH.LB/WB.SFYellow
Hens: RH.LB/WB.Normal
If a SFYellow has a Lilac Breast or White Breast on the males the visual body color will be yellow, in a Purple Breast SFYb male it will be visually green, so a "dilute" is SFYb but the bird has a Purple Breast. Very confusing ain't it? "Dilute" is just a made up term that just seems to confuse things more then help. In Australia they have a real mutation Dilute that is nothing like a SFYb "dilute" that some talk about around here.
At the Finch Information's genetics pages there are explanations for gouldian genetics that may help;
http://www.finchinfo.com/genetics/lady_ ... /index.php
Yellow body is a sex-linked gene ...Because it is a sex linked gene, cocks can be double-factor (DF) or single-factor (SF) for yellow body (the other factor being green body) while hens can only ever be single-factor (SF). Yellow body can occur in combination with any head or breast color; however, when a cock bird is single-factor for yellow body and single-factor for green body, and he also has a purple chest, he appears dilute (as explained below). If he is single-factor for yellow body (or, equally, single-factor for green body) with a white or lilac chest, he appears yellow. This occurs because body color is a polygenic trait which is influenced not only by the color coded for on the sex chromosomes, but also by the autosomal breast color (and blue body) genes. The yellow gene suppresses the expression of the color black on the birds, so any area which would normally be black on a green bird appears white or off-white on a yellow bird. This is why genetically black headed yellow birds appear to have white or near-white heads.
Dilute ... The single yellow body gene "battles" with the green body gene for expression, and so a little of each gene is expressed making the bird not green nor yellow but a shade in between... Dilute will never occur in a white breasted cock (since then the bird who is SFYB will appear yellow)... Because the yellow gene suppresses the expression of black coloration and because the green gene mutes the effects of the yellow gene, any normally black area on the bird will appear grey (as opposed to white), so black headed birds will have grey heads.

Re: WHAT WILL MY BABIES BE??????
I am new at breeding Lady Gouldian it was my first attempt to breeding two yellow back baby gouldians together the male came from a dilute orange head and the female was red head green back. The female I bought from a dealer. I notice they had 4 chicks and left them alone until they came out of there next and I was surprise to see two yellow back, one green back and a pied gouldian is this normal. How often does it happen because the yellow back show signs of yellow and white spots also.
