I was concerend about how youg birds would handle the SCATT this is what i found
out from TAMMY at
www.JustBirdStuff.com

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi B Camp -

I contacted Vetafarm asking if there was an age restriction (under 6 months) on the Scatt. I thought I would share the response I received from them:

Hello Tammy

Thanks for your enquiry. I emailed our vet your question and below is his response:

Provided the bird is free flying there is no age restriction - obviously do not use on nestlings. Application should be as per instructions. When applied as directed this is a safe medication.

So based on the response - it is safe to use on birds younger than 6 months of age.

Something else to consider about air sack mites and the products you use to solve the problem. IF the bird is heavily infested with the mites, once you kill these mites where do they go?

I have been told the dead air sack mites settle in the air sack, so if it were a large amount then wouldn't it hinder air flow which would be a cause of death in some of these birds even after treatment?

Apparently, as noted previously the mites infest the air sacs which are distributed around the body of the bird. If the bird is heavily infected with the mites and it is treated with a dose of Scatt, Ivermectin etc, the mites die and as the bird attempts to cough/sneeze them out they die from asphyxiation i.e. they suffocate (only if the bird is heavily infested).

I have had birds with Air Sac Mites (quite badly) and luckily the treatment didn't kill them and they recovered completely.

I have in front of me the leaflet supplied with a dropper of ivermectin bought in the UK. It states 'Ivermectin 0.1% for cagebirds.

Warning...Do not use on animals other than those indicated.Serious reactions including death have been reported in dogs...especially Collies,Old English Sheepdogs and related breeds...tortoises and turtles.

Without professional advice PLEASE be very careful.
