Growing Wheat Grass

Post by Sunbay » Fri Sep 20, 2013 11:57 am

Well, after several failed attempts, I think I *finally* got this "Grow your own wheat grass" thing right!
Off to the nursery for some organic potting soil.

That wheat grass looks very healthy and your birds are going to go wild for it! I would say you have got the hang of growing it for sure.

Almost all of mine love grass. Wheat grass is wonderful - and you can also grow their seed mix, which they also enjoy.

If you live near a Randall's grocery store you can get a 6"x6" tray of very nice wheat grass in their organic produce section for $1.99. My hookbills, finches, guinea pigs, cats and girlfriend love it!

Maybe a foolish question, but is this the same stuff that you can buy and grow for your cats? Looks identical and I know my cats eat it down to the seeds and then the seeds and some of the dirt as well ( dont ask me why) but doesnt hurt them.

It is one of the grasses in "cat grass". The cat grass seeds that I have has three other seeds (oat, rye, barley). They all look the same as wheat grass at first though.

Wheat, oat, rye and barley are all good grasses to offer your birds.

Perfectly fine if it's oat, rye, wheat or barley. Alfalfa is good too.
