question re harmful fumes: gas fireplace?
I am wondering whether it would be harmful to my finches to use my gas fireplace. The finches are in a room on the second floor; we keep its door closed. The fireplace is on the first floor. They seem to be fine with our gas heating (which comes through the vents into their room), but the fireplace has more of an odor (although I only notice it on the first floor)...thoughts?

Re: question re harmful fumes: gas fireplace?
I have used my gas fire place without any problems. My birds use to be in my family room and I would put in on each morning to warm up the room before uncovering their cages. I have also used it this fall and my bird room is on my 2nd floor and has a screen door. If you're worried about the initial smell when using it for the 1st time, open your windows until the smell dissipates...this is JMO and its based on my own experience. You can contact your avian vet and ask their opinion too.

I agree with Ginene, a gas fireplace would be no different then a gas stove. I have a gas stove and use it all the time with the birds in the next room about 6 feet away. Never had a bird get ill from my cooking yet

Re: question re harmful fumes: gas fireplace?
A gas fireplace should be no different than a gas furnace, and both will have a funky smell the first time they are fired up in the autumn.
If you smell anything other than that, you may want to have it checked out to make sure it's venting properly and there are no gas leaks.
I have a gas fireplace in my bedroom and have kept birds in there with no problems.
