Oh poor little finch baby.

This is my baby zebra finch, he is about 2.5 months old. In the pic he look like very panic, cuz I put it in restroom to help his wound I was feeding my finches tnite, saw the perches and food container inside his cage appeared in red color. I was scaring because I know something wrong, he was line in the cage. Do you know what cause the wound? He lived in this cage since fledging so about near 2mo. I was so glad I saw it even dark already but I have my ceiling light on when fed my finches. I helped him and stop bleeding afterward, I want to know what cause the injury, maybe I put the millet spray yesterday and he finished it, the stem was too sharp when he landed on it? I will observe him more tomorrow, since I make sure he stop bleeding for now:( the wound is under his left foot, I saw it any put some powder on it stop bleed. Is it safe now? I don't see any pieces stuck under his foot, hope it all heal over time. I've heard finches cannot bleed too much otherwise cause him to death, that will break my heart.

It must be the blood dried out but still can see from the perch.

I put him back to cage while stop him from bleeding more in restroom.

Hi David,

unfortunately sometimes birds will cut themselves on edges or might fight with eachother. You can use corn flour, flour or even dip the foot into some soap (from the shower - moisten it first), These will all create a physical barrier which will stop the bleeding. If it doesn't get the bird to an avian vet (they may need to bandage it). Also infection can be an issue. Good luck with your little finch. He looks like a cutie. I have a six month old, but he's quite boistrous and big,

ps I've used this technique on other animals, like dogs as well, and it also worked. It can be a bit messy, but it will work

Thank for your reply so quick I actually did put flour powder tnite . Sorry I put powder but should be flour hehe. Also my sentence says"line in the cage" on 6th row, I meant "he is alone in the cage". My phone always auto correct words wrong lol. Btw this baby was pretty big, but he was injured by other female when he just fledgling few weeks ago, I was putting both together thought they got song win each other, but suddenly the female was plucking at him so bad and he loose a lot of feather on both thigh (near wings area) so I found out after got home that Monday noon time luckily not delay too long... I saved him once already and so put it in a cage to heal now still growing feather, took few weeks already. Also his tail feather was more now but not completely yet, that's why he looks like so weird at the end too like bobtail.

You can see his tail white spot still uneven, but the leg was better got some feather at least. I feel heart ached see him suffered a lot. I went out to grocery early and when I got home still didn't know until I feed them, I heard the chasing sound too which was not good cuz the female attacked him so bad and plucked his feather no matter where he fly up or down. So sad and I am praying he will become this time No infection or anything.

Before he was injured he was almost same size as the dad which big size before, I didn't have the pic here with my phone. I hope he can grow back his size, since he was attacking by the female, I separated immediately after heard fighting sound, chased and plucked by the female. When I held him on my hand felt so light weight that he was before and today (which after few weeks from separate the 2 finches )when I got him on my hand some better but not fully weight like he was before. One injury caused a long damage, need time to heal his body beside his feather need to regrow too, poor baby.

The female may have also been keeping him from eating, since he has lost weight, or she just chased him so much. He should improve now that he is by himself. Be sure to give him some eggfood, as the protein will help him grow feathers.

I'm glad you found him and were able to stop the bleeding. I notice you have twist ties on the bars of the cage. Is there a chance that one of the wires poked the bottom of his foot when he was climbing around the side of the cage? I would check and make sure the wire ends were secured and on the outside of the cage.

Thanks, I gave him egg food ever since that incident. However, he doesn't egg food much :/ the egg food stay on cage floor always spoiled and I got to remove it, since he doesn't like it much , unlike my other zebbies love egg food so much. I scontinue gave him veggies beside seeds. Maybe he doesn't know what cuttlebone is, no matter I tried hung it on cage bar or I scraped it put in his dish, but never eat that too, kind of picky!

My green twisted ties was for the millet spray when I hung it on cage and twisted it make the millet even more stable. If never gives him or any of my other finches problems. I actually found the wound was from the stem of a big piece of millet spray. Because I found some blood only on the bottom piece ( I didn't take a pic of it), where your fingers hold the millet area. I touched it with my finger feel so rough there and sharp tiny pieces sticking out like, almost get a cut on my finger too:(. I saw him stand on this piece of millet when learn to sing daytime, and often too. But I didn't know it was sharp over there where he stand on(when I realized and saw the blood, the piece of millet spray was stuck between the cage bars area near bottom part of the cage). Now I am thinking even he stop bleeding after I put flour on it, but how can I tell if any tiny pieces of millet sharp stuff stuck under his foot? If it heal by itself, is there any problems with his foot if pieces got in there? Or the piece from wound area will fall off before healing?

My baby zebra finch is doing ok now, no more bleeding and he is singing all day in the cage. I am so glad I save him couple days ago
