Can I give my M/M BCCB's a nest?
Re: Can I give my M/M BCCB's a nest?
Deal!
Blueberry (blue male) and Cricket (green female, lucida in there also) are hot-to-trot at this point. Blueberry is bickering with his sisters more and more, I don't think he wants to share his home with both his wife and his sisters anymore. They're all about 1-1/2 years old or so, so it's time.
The two girls, it seems, would also love husbands, however they are making do with each other. sigh. no shame in those two.

Lol! Bert and Ernie (BCCBs) are a hoot too! They do the courtship dance to one another, but so far no one has tried mating with the other. Everyone is enjoying the coco fiber in the flight. Hopefully it will continue to entertain and distract everyone, without any nests actually being constructed. If I am correct, the owl pair is still too young to breed...

Re: Can I give my M/M BCCB's a nest?
Update...Bert and Ernie are constructing a nest on a wooden corner shelf. Sadly, this was the owls spot before the cage divider was removed. I guess they will have to use the corner shelf on the other side of the flight.
Question...Do owls use coco fiber to build nests too? I wonder if they will try to go to nest now, as they are a M/F pair...but too young to breed at this time.

I've never used coco fiber but my owls love to build their own nest over using any box or bought nest. They use long strands of grass so it's easy to weave into the shape they need. if coco fiber is easy to bend and weave with I'm sure they will take right to it

My owls love coco fiber and build nests with it readily.

Re: Can I give my M/M BCCB's a nest?
Now I'm not sure who is building this coco fiber nest...I thought it was the BCCB boys, but now I think that it might be my owls. They're back to perching/sleeping on that wooden shelf again, so I think they have reclaimed their turf. Anyway, things seemed pretty peaceful in the mixed flight today so I am a happy finch mommy

Hi Ginene,
Bert and Ernie sound like a laugh! What a sweet couple! My 12 year canary has to be kept away from my other finches at the moment, as he has "randy bird syndrome" and keeps trying to proposition the other two finches. Shall we say, they are less than impressed with his overtures! He has a love you (disco ball) to fawn over now.
Aren't birds funny? LOL

Zebrafincher
. But I worry too much when Mother Nature sticks her monkey wrench into my peaceful bird room
. Bert and Ernie are a funny pair...and the cutest little BCCBs I have ever seen! I think the owls are the ones building the coco fiber nest. They have reclaimed their shelf and are back to perching there. All seems quiet, for now, in bird land.
I think its amazing that your canary is 12 years old and still has the energy to court your finches
!!! I think canaries are lovely...I had 2 for a very short while
...but will be sticking with finches only from now on. I do hope to get a hand fed baby parrotlet some day as a companion bird...but hubby has a strict 13 finch rule right now
YES they sure are!!!! I LOVE watching them...there's always something new to learn about themAren't birds funny? LOL

Oh Boy, Jennie...my OWLS are going to town building an amazing coco fiber nest from scratch!!! It is the most amazing thing to watch!!! I just emailed Helen to find out how old they are and to ask if its safe for them to have their first clutch at their current age. You and Ruth may wind up getting owls sooner than either of you think

Re: Can I give my M/M BCCB's a nest?
Ginene that is so funny! Bert and Ernie sound adorable! I have two of my girls currently going crazy for one another. Of course Sparrow loves all the girls and sings and dances all day long and tries to peek at them past the towels I have separating their views from one another. But my two girls River (a.k.a. Puppy) and Jayne (a.k.a. Terminator) have a fairly good view of one another and River makes these cute squeaky yipping noises constantly. I didn't even think zebra finches could make those noises let alone a female.. it isn't like the cuddling squeak noises their parents make but more like monkey sounds or a yipping puppy. And Terminator has laid three eggs in her food bowl so far. The two of them constantly interact with one another all day and are constantly puffing up and being adorable! I might eventually have to block their view of one another if Terminator turns into an egg laying beast like her mother who has laid another 8 eggs in her food bowl totaling somewhere around 30 so far! And I don't even give her any egg food, nesting material, places to nest other than her food bowl. I am hoping the winter weather and decreased sunlight with make her stop!

Holy Moly!!! That hen is determined!!! It sounds like your zebbies have all found their nitch and there's a bit more peace at your house. I'm LOVING my new flock!!! They are a blast to watch! I love their personalities...each bird is so different. My Stars are the bravest and friendliest too! The Singers have a silly "dance" that they do around their cage. Those two are definitely in loveI might eventually have to block their view of one another if Terminator turns into an egg laying beast like her mother who has laid another 8 eggs in her food bowl totaling somewhere around 30 so far! Re: Can I give my M/M BCCB's a nest?
Ginene I am so happy you are back to "finching"! I still have occasional problems with mine.. though ever since I had to separate Kuri and the babies and help her hand feed them she has a lot of trust in me now. Shadow can be a pain. He is a very happy boy but while Kuri is sitting on her eggs he will go over to her, pretend he is going to eat or grab a few pieces of whatever they manage to stuff in there to use as nesting material and then snatch a few feathers off her. Sometimes I will stand there and everytime he gets close I say, "Nooo!" and he hops away so she definitely knows I am not a threat to her. She even started sticking up for herself! Sparrow is still a scaredy cat, and makes adorable little squeal noises and high pitched chirps he learned from wild birds, and out of the girls Terminator is the boldest but the most skittish, River/Puppy is very calm and trusting and will talk to me, and Calypso is funny but still kinda skittish. They all LOVE taking baths every day. I love my babies and don't know what I'd do without them! I am so happy that all of your birds are healthy and seem to be happy and adjusting well!! Can't wait to see if you end up with some babies! I am still trying to figure out the cage situation as two of mine are in cages that aren't as big as I'd like but still have no car right now! And I lost my job!! But that means more time with my babies!
