Success at last!

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Ginene this little canary is so funny! The evil looks it gives...

At about 7pm last night, I'm in my room and I'm hearing this 'thwack thwack' sound coming from the aviary, followed by this angry chirping. I look out my window and the fledgling is on the fence of the aviary (bright white, you can't miss it, lol!) with my cat happily on the other side trying to swipe at it. Thank heaven's there is plastic in between or else the little one might have ended up with some claw marks. It wasn't scared, just shouted at the cat and fluttered off again. It's definitely a character!!!

I've had five chicks leave the nest on the same day, even though they were up to 5 days younger in hatching. Of course they weren't quite as able to get around as their older siblings. It was quite comical at times to watch them try to keep up. As long as the parents continue to feed it, it will continue to grow and develop - probably faster than if it remained in the nest. Glad that things seem to be going well. Bob

30 Seconds to Bob

Thank you Bob! It's doing really well so far. It has found it's parents new nest site in the aviary and has made itself comfortable in that basket now. My mom is at home during the day and keeps an eye on the birds for me. She said it was fluttering around and finding it's way around quite well. I'll keep an eye on it this weekend.

They are very different to finch chicks - development is much quicker. I'm finding it all very interesting :)

Ginene

Grumpy is now just over 2 months old and the siblings are now 5 weeks old. Crystal recently laid another clutch but I removed them after she laid the 4th egg. I'm forcing her to take a break, otherwise she will just go on and on and the season has just begun :shock: The weather has finally warmed up (yay!) and is being pretty constant, so I will be moving all 3 babies into the juvie flight this weekend. They are so full of character and very curious about everything :D

Still to be named (I'm actually forcing myself to stop naming them all, otherwise I will never be able to rehome any of them)

Very nice! Glad that you got to enjoy canary breeding success. Even better when they youngsters begin to sing. Bob

@monotwine

Thanks guys!! :D

Bob, from what age do the males start to sing? I moved all 3 over to the juvie flight Sunday morning and 'Grumpy' is definitely more vocal now. I'm thinking male but he is only about 10 weeks now, so not sure if that is old enough to start singing?

I've had male timbrado and timbrado crosses begin to sing at as early as three months. But usually it is around 6 to 8 months when most canaries develop a more polished song. Bob

Thanks Bob :) Grumpy is definitely not singing, just chirping a lot more than the others. Will wait and see :D
