One of my baby finch got a scissor beak?

Post by David » Wed Nov 20, 2013 11:51 pm

Hi everyone, please try to help me out. I've got a female baby zebra finch (about 4month old) her upper beak was almost 1cm+ longer than the lower beak :( She was like this since grown into adult color, so not just temporary. I don't know if I should try to trim the extra length with a scissor or nail clipper? Also it was kind of scissor shape like, which top and bottom beaks uneven close. (It happened to my other finch but opposite way, she got lower beak longer than upper one, but NOT scissor shape tho. I posted another forum here about that I trimmed its beak first time and work well!) my baby finch is ok to eat but I can tell she eat slowly than any other finches :( I am worrying about her, all of her toe nails slightly longer too which can't grab the perches properly like others . Any suggestions would be great! Thanks in advance, and hope I can help her.. Also her nails still black color like a baby, all other babies (same clutch) already turn to red color, indeed this is a special bird:) maybe due to the incubation period something went wrong when parents sit on the clutch of babies? Thanks for your time again!

I would trim her beak and her nails especially if she is having problem eating and perching.

Hi Debbie, I will try to trim her beak and nails today. Just wondering if the beak is over-trimmed would cause bleeding and it won't grow back again permanent right? I trimmed my other zebbie's lower beak, but NEVER trim nail before, how long should I trim her nail? I google that and come up with some info about how to trim finches' beak and nails, but wasn't sure if they are usuful:( thanks for your reply Debbie.

Here is a link to an article about trimming nails. With the beak, I would trim just a little at a time. Better to take it slow than to risk taking off too much. I just use nail clippers and trim to gradually bring the beak back into alignment.

Thanks Sally! I was busy all week, just back and reply you so late lol! I trimmed tiny bit of her beak, the nails was pretty difficult to work with cuz my finch is moving all the time, didn't want to hurt her more :( will try trim the nail again tomorrow.

Scissor beak finch - updated

Post by David » Thu Dec 05, 2013 8:28 pm

Hi everyone, I just curious about my finch's beak, I just trimmed her beak around 2 weeks ago, but today I see her beak(bottom part) is overgrown again :/ do I need to keep doing this every 2weeks? I don't want to stress her out even I just calmed her down from my palm, please give me some advices. I put cuttlebone in her cage before and she used to peck on it (like few months ago) but now she stopped using it, did she forgot how to use it? I put the pedi perch-like for her still not helpful. Her beak just became like this recent months, so not born like that, anyway I can avoid her overgrown in the future? I fed her with same food as other finches, she's the only one got this problem. Thanks in advance!
