Brace yourselves, cute overload...
Brace yourselves, cute overload...
I wanted to share with you all some iPhone pics of my pals Heidi and Fritz.
Also, I'm wondering if Fritz has enough room to stretch his wings out in his home. It's the Hagen Vision L02 which seemed bigger to me initially but now seems a lot smaller in comparison to Heidi's McMansion... Thoughts?

Re: Brace yourselves, cute overload...
Gorgeous birds!! Congrats
They each have a mansion!
My canaries love to chew on fake plants, it keeps them busy for hours. Some people say they don't need 'toys' but I have found mine love playing with the plants, pieces of string tied to the side of the cage or even safe wooden branches for them to chew on. It definitely helps to keep them occupied and stimulated. If you don't mind cleaning up a mess, give them an almost finished toilet roll and tie down the middle of the roll with some string to hold the paper dpwn. My canaries then completely enjoy shredding the paper to bits!

Generally speaking, a longer cage is preferred for a canary, but those are plenty big enough. I agree with Rox in that although many people deem them unnecessary, canaries do enjoy toys. Just avoid mirrors with male canaries. Bob

Oh my goodness, so adorable! My canary loves toys. Right now his favourite is a little budgie toy that has a fork, spoon and knife hanging off it. He also loves his little disco ball.

Re: Brace yourselves, cute overload...
Canaries and finches definitely like toys! Mine love the hanging ones with twine. I'll have to try the toilet roll - that sounds funny! LOL My male canary is currently in love with and feeding his disco ball.

Re: Brace yourselves, cute overload...
After reading your feedbacks I will definitely give some toys a shot to enrich Fritz and Heidi's environments. The school where I teach is all about sensory exploration, and I too firmly believe that stimuli result in cognitive development. I had not already added toys though because I had read that canaries do not play with toys, but I suppose "play" is open to interpretation. I never use the word "play" with my students anyway. I use words like "explore" instead since essentially that is what they are doing. I will make time tomorrow to pick up some toys so that Heidi and Fritz too can explore the workings of this fascinating world more thoroughly.
Also, I just found out that Fritz's cage is the Vision M02 (medium) and not the L02 (large) so it is probably that much more important that I provide him with more "tools" to entertain himself in his rather humble home.

OMG, the German names! Lol…so cute! The cages look great too. I think Fritz is, and will be, just fine.
