Housing Questions

Post by Lithium » Tue Dec 03, 2013 10:40 pm

My mom just told me that we're gonna be moving. She says we're gonna be completely moved into out new place before Christmas. However, she wants to get rid of my budgies and my two white pied male Zebras. I have five budgies and they're in a 30" x 18" x 30" cage right now. Is there any way I could get all five of them in a smaller cage? And would a 30" x 18" x 32" be able to house eight Zebras if properly set up? I could get a ton of plants and stuff it full of plants and put tons of things in there to distract them from each other.

Oh my god, maybe not a good idea to house all of the 5 budgies and or 8 zebbies in that size of cage :/ but you still can try to put a lot of plants and see what happen first, but keep your eyes on them since they might fight or injure each other when you are not around to see them. I hope it works out even crowded (I feel bad but if that's the only choice to save your birdies:/ ) good luck to you! keep us updated! :) I wish you can save the birdies too, instead of get rid of them :(

Lithium I am sorry to hear about the situation you are in!! As far as the zebras.. I don't think it would be a terrible idea to try it. You obviously understand they need adequate space.. and providing greenery and plenty of perches, food and water bowls but not overcrowding it may work. Hopefully someone else can give some advice here.. I certainly am no expert. Are the finches all together at the moment?

As for the budgies.. when I was younger I had five all together in a cage a bit smaller than that. I never had any issues with then fighting. Of course I didn't know that much about proper spacing back then.. but it can be done. My budgies did have free flight fine though. I would wait and see what others say though. To me it seems like it could work for the finches. Like I said I could be wrong.. but if everything is harmonious I'd think it could work.

Currently the Zebras are all separate. I only have six right now, but I have four males and two females. I have a pair in one cage, a pair in another, and a M/M pair in another. I have my pied pair, which are the first two I got, in the big cage right now. The other four are in smaller cages next to them. The cage would be completely rearranged.

My five budgies, two males and three females, are currently in the 30" x 18" x 30" cage. They've been in that for as long as I've had them. I just want to know if there is any possible way to put them in something smaller. Before my mom told me we were moving, I had plans to get A&E Double Flights for both the Zebras and the Budgies.

Lithium My only concern would be putting paired off zebras all into one cage together and having them possibly un-pair or fight. As for the budgies.. I believe the cage that I had was about 12"d x 16"w x 22"h for all 5 but as I mentioned they had plenty of free flight during the day and got along incredibly well. I hope someone else will have some ideas for you!!

Update: I have my two M/F Zebra pairs coexisting in the 30" x 18" x 32" cage. I read in another post that you can clip their wings just short enough that they can't really chase each other around. All four birds can still fly, and they are doing fine together. Hopefully it stays that way. I'm going to get the to female Zebras I need when I have enough money, after their quarantine I'll put them in with each of the white pied males for a while. Then they'll all go into the big flight.

I'm probably just gonna keep the budgies in the cage that their in. I should be able to build a shelf to put them on where ever we end up living.
