airsac mite treatment- Australia

Post by adamharbeck » Tue Dec 10, 2013 12:31 am

Hi all,

I want to treat my birds for air sac mites. I have read online that Scatt is the best product, but this is not available/legal in Australia.
I have also been told Avimec is suitable, although it is not registered to treat air sac mites.

What are people using here in Aus?

Thanks,
Adam

If I'm not mistaken Moxidectin or Moxidectin plus is / was avail in Aust. and used for worms and blood sucking parasites.

Don't seem to be able to access that forum.

I had hoped to buy some Scatt online.
But it's not going to happen :(

Scatt is Moxidectin here is Australia. You can get it from any bird vet fairly cheaply =D>

Avimec has Ivermectin as it's active ingredient so it would be more like S76 or Iverlux

It would be fine to use but you will have to apply multiple times not just once like Scatt, just be sure to follow directions

Hello Adam moxidectin is used to help cure ASM along with other parasites, ivomec will do almost the same. With moxidectin you can get moxidectin plus which includes a tapeworm killer which ivomec doesn't. Does ivomec work well simply yes and it is usually a bit cheaper, but I have found that ivomec to be slower and requires a few more treatments to cure the issue. Both are great as a wormer so keep this in mind when its time to worm your birds. With ivomec there is a bit of an issue how to give this product, some believe that it works in drinking water while others believe that it sinks to the bottom, I also believe this. So I would suggest putting a drop on the side of the neck and if the bird is really bad state then even an additional drop on the inside of a leg, remember blow away feathers to give the dose on skin as it will absorb through the skin. I personally use moxidectin but on a change I will go to ivomec.

the birds wheeze loudly when agitated. they seem and sing fine otherwise, but I thought it might be best to treat them.

Air sac mites (Sternostoma or Cytodites) Loss of condition, cough, sneeze, nasal discharge, unable to sing, response to treatment. Particularly common in Gouldians,Moxidectin orally or spot on

they might not have it. they seem ok, but prevention is better than cure.
