Mating behavior is just sometimes a dominance display--I'm Top Bird and don't you forget it! I have had males mount males, and females mount everybody! (saw her lay an egg, was so surprised as I was sure she was a male for months.)

Nests will encourage nesting, while they like to sleep in one, they don't need to. Add some extra greenery around a perch or group of perches, so they can snuggle in that but won't see it as a fit place to lay eggs.

Thanks! I'll remove the nest. And this bird is not female. It's male! He's "singing". Atleast he's trying and it sounds very funny. But he's singing!

Hey! I haven't written for months now, but I desided to say some things. I've sold my society finches and going to sell my 4 lovely budgies too. Cherry finches are laying eggs again and I really really hope they are going to have 3 cute babybirds. They have done nicely but I don't remember when did they start, but I guess they have hatched almost 2 weeks now. Can't wait to see what's going to happen. Thet would be amazing Christmas gift.

Also sorry cause of my bad English.

I don't know what to do...

I really wanna breed cherry finches but they FAIL every time! I can see they just don't feed chicks so they die. But why? I don't get it... :/

I don't breed cherry finches either, but I wanted to say that some birds need practice before they get it right. How many fails is this? Maybe there is hope that they will get it right, eventually?

It is tough watching clutch after clutch die. I'm having that same issue with one of my Bourke's hens. I've been encouraged to give her one more try, and if she still doesn't get it, then to foster the fertile eggs to a different pair. It's too bad you don't still have your society finches.

It was like...4th time now. But I think they failed with their previous owner too. And I guess that's why she sold them. There's no more these birds in my country, so I guess she had no more reasons to sell them. I guess I'm gonna keep them, but it's really sad if they can't get any successors...

Anyway. Today I looked them and saw something weird. I guess I saw that about a week ago too, but didn't put much attention to it. I don't know how to explain that but I guess that tis picture says everything:

Well I saw that I can take it away and I did this, but her beak looks still a bit weird. What should I do? Is it ok or should I go to the doctor? Also, what is that?

Oh my god, why me?! Why my birds?! :'( Just can't stop crying. I don't know how to explain it in English, but I'm trying. My female cherry finsh failed with laying her egg and it came out with sewer and some kind of gut/intestine. I tryed to call many vets and no one know anything about birds. I'm glad one vet helped me a little bit so I know what happened and she told me that this bird is going to die. There's no change to save her when her intestine came out. Then I called back to the first vet and asked how much costs putting down this bird and he said they are not doing this and I asked HOW MUCH and he said 60 €, but I don't have this money and it made me so sad because it is so painful to just watch her dying. She's trying so hardly to get rid of the egg but she's making things worse. This intestine came more off... like 2 or more cm now. It is so sad I can't do anything to help her. I'm so depressed. Here are some pictures... AND WHAT I'M GONNA DO WITH MY MALE CHERRY when female is going to die?

There's no more cherry finches in my country.

Hello FLuffy,

I'm so sorry for you and your little bird. The kindest thing you can do with her is to have her put down humanely. Unfortunately injuries with egg binding are often fatal. I only keep males now because I was so devastated after losing several females (1 Zebby, Queenie, and a yellow Canary, TB (Tennis Ball)).

With your remaining male, give him a mirror in the meantime, to comfort him. Maybe you can find another kind of finch to be a companion - I have heard society finches are supposed to be very friendly.

I have three males (Canary, Zebbie and Star finch). They are all male and have separate cages. The finches have mirrors and are absolutely in LOVE with their reflections.

Oh I'm so sorry. I had checked back hoping to see a success story with the cherries. I think they are beautiful birds and would love to have some one day. I would look up euthanasia on here. I know there was a thread about it sometime ago regarding different ways to perform it. It would be best to get her out of her misery as soon as you can since none of the vets will do it for you.

And I'd try a society for company....

And post in the health section to get faster replies regarding emergencies like this.

She's dead. Rest in peace my dear!

This is so sad. Male bird is just calling her all the time and singing. I think he hasn't eat anything. I'm going to bury my dead bird on my yard and going to the pet shops to find some company for my male cherry.

I leave radio on, so male bird don't have to be in silence.

Hi Fluffy,

even keep your bird near the budgies (if they are inside) because birds love hearing eachother . The radio also helps. I keep my birds supplied with rock, jazz, classical, and ordinary ol' radio stations! They love it!.
