Interesting combo, and very cute.
I'd be curious to hear what the song would be like, if it's male. With Society and Java genes, and then being handfed - it could be quite interesting.

What a cute little bird! Is it male or female? Is it likely to be sterile (being a hybrid - because I've heard some aren't)?

The society finchs mate escaped from the aviary months back n we put him in a cage.The Java was put in the same cage to be taken to another cage but withn a few days n they started to build a nest shorty n there was eggs .5 eggs was laid. 3 hatched. after a couple of days they stopped feeding the chicks. 1 died and we took the two to hand feed. one survived.

My guess is that the nest was too small and crowded.

What color were the parents? It will be very interesting to watch this bird mature. Are you going to keep it? Being part Java and hand fed, it could be very tame. So glad that it survived.

They java hen could have already been fertilized when she was put in the cage. Seeing how she laid the eggs within a few days of being put in the cage maybe the chick isn't a hybrid at all. Will be interesting to see it feathered out.

Hi i dug up this old post thinking that you guys would be interested to know how the Hybrid turned out, because luckily i acquired that very same bird from him and here he is and yes it is a male.

He came out beautiful! Wow, normally not attracted to hybrids. Maybe this can be used to create a giant society??

not sure it is fertile.... I avoid two different species breeding. It does happen accidentally but doing this on purpose is often frowned upon. We are not getting imports like we use to and in some areas finches are very hard to find. The species that are difficult to find or are in low numbers we should try to preserve. JMO.
