WANTED: Star Finch
Good evening! I picked up a lone male star finch from a bird store a couple months ago, the shop said they were getting more in the next week, but they never came, they can't get any more apparently. I've been looking for months around LA to no avail. Anyone have a handle on a breeder in the Los Angeles area, I'd love to get my little guy a buddy. I'd be open to an owl finch also.
Thank you in advance!

Re: WANTED: Star Finch
Just be aware that Star Finches, though listed as 'passive' can be quite aggressive to other birds. My little Star finch, Merl, has to be kept separate as he bosses my much larger canary around, and also picks fights with my Zebbie (he's a trouble maker!). My other star finch, Fruit, was even worse! He was flightless but would jump out of his own cage to attack my other birds! Funny little birds!
They also do respond to red faced birds as well.
Good luck, you might have a gentle one.
Cheers

Re: WANTED: Star Finch
I must of got lucky.. My star has been great.. I have alot of different small waxbills and a few red faced gouldians.. and he was loving to his girl who had a broken wing. but now that she has passed things may change... but I think a star is not an aggressive bird. my green singer is a terror!!

Re: WANTED: Star Finch
The store was happy to sell him to me, he was housed with shafttails and masked grass finches and was getting beaten up. He's really wonderful and sings beautifully. If I can't find him another star, any recommendations for other generally super docile finches? Gouldians always seem to be available here.

Re: WANTED: Star Finch
Yes, stars can be agressive as Zebrafincher said. My pairs chase around the societies and african silverbills, even parrot finches. It can be worse when it's breeding season . No one dares to approach their nest.

Re: WANTED: Star Finch
Star finches are lovely birds. When I got Merl he was being beaten up as well by about 12 other birds in the same cage and was as bald as a badger (looked like a plucked turkey). He has a very gentle, soft song; but on the other hand, he's got small bird syndrome. My birds do make me laugh!
